Bitter Apple Spray for Rodents?

Zorro started chewing on the wood framing to the cage door last night. I expect him to chew, he's a rodent, but gnawing on the door made the entire cage rattle and it kept waking me up all night. There are plenty of other alternatives in the cage for chewing. Do you think that bitter apple spray stuff for dogs might work for a rodent? Or would he even notice it?

I haven't used it myself, but I know people who have used it for rats and it has worked. So give it a try.

Provide him with lots of chewing items, like wood blocks and things. Also hard pieces of food work well too.I give mine doggy milkbone sometimes, which they enjoy and it provides them with chewing. You can also give them a chicken or turkey bone.

no turkey bones ;[

But yea bitter apple works with a lot of animals, and also doesn't work with a lot of other animals. It's worth a try. It's used a lot for ferrets digging at carpeting/doors -- and works for them about 50% of the time.

I use that stuff for Zeus. He likes to chew wires and baseboards but when I spray that stuff on them he won't go near them. The only problem I've had is that if I touch the things I sprayed, the spray gets all over my hands which is annoying.

Well, I picked up some of that spray, and sprayed it on the wood. Hopefully it works, I'll let you know!

It seems to be working... Zorro took a little taste of the wood when I put him back after playtime, and hasn't touched it since.

Door rattling... hmm, do you have some rubber/foam type wedges? Might need to be fairly stiff so the rat doesn't chew it off, but if you put it around the hinges/latches, then it might stop any rattling.

Just an idea.

Well, after testing the wood and chewing it a little, Zorro seemed to decide that it really did taste bad. There was a bit of evidence of chewing this morning, but he didn't wake me up last night, so yay. Hopefully he'll figure out that no matter where and when he goes for it, it's gonna be yucky.

Does he have other things to chew on in his cage? I recommend willow sticks, my degus stopped chewing the bars of their cage immediately after I got them.
Although they had other things to chew, they just didn't seem interested until I gave them willow sticks.
Willow balls designed for rabbits are also good, they like to play with them

i have used EVERY single no chew spray, apple bitter and the latest spray i have used is fooey...and let me tell you....its alll bs...at best if you spray sooooo much of fooey to the pt where the area is a bit sticky from so much..that they leave it alone....perhaps if they are youngsters during their investigating and chewing phase they would respond better...although i have never had 100% success with these sprays for all my rodents...hamsters eventually learn to like apple bitter spray..

another thing that can be used to distract the guy from chewing that area would be to get a softer piece of chewing wood like in the bird section such as balsa wood or those wheat strung nests....attracts them to it like bees to honey..lol
