great DIY cage

If anyone needs a big cage for their rats but doesnt have the money to buy one or the time to build one, i have the answer. this is a really easy way to make a big and confy cage for your rats. just find two or three (depending on the number of rats living in it) of those big dog crates. not the kind that are all medal but the kind that look like big cat carriers (i appologize for not being good at explaining things.lol) stack them on top of each other and make a big hole in the bottem of the one/two top ones. make a ramp to the hole so the rat can get up. then you decorate it however you want and you are done.

Hmmm.. I think that could be as expensive as a cage... The 2 dog kennels I have to take my doggies in trips costed me around $30 each one... and the are not the bigges dog kennels (I think they are the size you are thinking about...).

Still, that's a nice idea, if you have the spare kennels (or can get them cheap used somewhere). As Zouave said, a picture would be nice. 8)

Wouldn't it be kind of dark in the kennels? From what I can remember there are only small side vents and they actually might chew through the plastic at that point because of the exposed edges.. just a thought.

I'm sure with the right tools you could make it into a rattie palace but it would need a LOT of modification!

well the kennels that i have, have medal vents on both sides and the whole front is medal bars. so it actually is pretty light in there. but i guess if you wanted it even lighter you could cut off the top and put some medal bars up there too. that would be good for more ventalation as well. i havnt actually finished with the whole cage yet so if anyone has any suggestions to add that would be great. thanks.
