My two newbies are named Fjola and Fingal.

Fjola got her name because for as long as I can remember,it has been my favorite name.It is a Scandinavian name and means "flower".

I named Fingal that after a song I really like by a local band called "The Navigators".The song is called "The Giant".I also know Fingal is a county in Ireland.I like the sound of it,so that is how li'l one got his name.

Emerson, Hawthorne and Austen were named after authors. Baby ( whos name is Houdini but he answers to both that and baby) was named after, obviously Harry Houdini. My rats that have passed were Piggy Pigs ( Named Edgar after Edgar Cayce but would only answer to piggy or piggy pigs), Vlad after Vlad the Impaler ( he was a hairless and people thought he was creepy, ironicly he was my baby and loved to cuddle..but didnt like other people) and Poe ( named after Edgar A. Poe).

I wanted to name my two newest little ones Irish names. So after browsing a couple of Irish name websites,I decided on:

Brennan because it means "little drop" and he has a little spot on his head.I thought it was perfect.
Regan got his name because I just liked the sound of it.It means "little king".

Fredi got her name because my husband wanted to name a rat Fredrick, but we got girls instead so we named her Fredrika it's too long so we call her Fredi.

Tippy got her name because I thought it was cute. Tipp is German for brave and she defiantly lives up to her name.

Brigsby - We wanted to name him something epic but couldn't think of anything. When we got schubert, we were going to name Brigsby Strauss and then schubert be schubert, but we found the name brigsby and loved it better for him.

Schubert - I'm a music fanatic. I was listening to a Schubert piece and thought what an awesome name that would be!

Because I breed a fair amount of ratty litters, it makes life so much easier to theme my litter names.

The most recent litter consisted of 5 boys named Tainted Love, Sweet Dreams, Mobscene, Saint and Cryptorchid. The theme was Marilyn Manson songs.

The litter before that had 4 bubs named Rhiw, Ethuil, Iavas and Laer. It's the Sindarin (elvish) names for the seasons.

Other themese included star names, celebrities, zodiac signs, sayings, night, mythological creatures and a bunch others.

Sphynx...Well, she's a hairless rat and I know hairless cats are called Sphinx cats. But I didn't like the spelling so I changed it. And it just fit. Though a lot of people I know now call her "Spynx" because they can't pronounce it XD

Elphie, she's one of my oops litter babies. She was the smallest out of them all and so I wanted to name her based on that. Plus I recently saw the play Wicked, in which a character named Elphaba is nicknamed Elphie. So it just fit.

And now I'm puzzling over what to name my blue dumbo eared boy...Nothing seems to click! Any suggestions?

This is quite an old thread, but what the heck! My dog is a Lhasa apso called Sparky mainly because of his lively personality, my girls are called Hoody, because she is a Hooded rat, and June is called June because I got them on the 1st of June, and it will help me keep track of how old they are, but also because it is a simple old fashioned name.....

This thread is not THAT old...I don't care that it is bumped all the time,as I love hearing how or why people call their pets the names they do.

the rats i used to have were
mattimao- named after a pratty child that grew up to be a worrior
robin hood- he is a hooded rat so it seemed to work
gandalf- he was a pale silver gray so it fit

my current rats were origionally named sherlok and indiana, names i hated, so i renaimed them fern and flora. i thought the name fern was more out going with she is so that fit. flora is shy and cuddly and i thought the name flora sounded delicate so thats what i decided on. if i ever get any more female rats im going to name them thystle, willow, or aspen. these names would work for male rats to, especialy aspen

Armin is named after Armin Meiwes, the German cannibal (his only victim was WILLING).I am fascinated with Armin Meiwes and have done alot of reading on him and researched him so much and decided my next male rat would be called Armin.

So my newest ratty is Armin, after the cannibal guy.

Yuki- I guess it means 'snow' in Japanese, but I just thought it was cute.
Boru- It means 'ball' in Japanese. She looked like a little ball, and it matched with Yuki. They became 'Snowball.'
Bella- I had seen the Twilight movie recently.
Daisy- Sounded cute.
Chrysanthemum- Went along with the flower theme.
Velvet- She has just a little bit of fur on her butt and it feels kinda like velvet.
