manx mice & Clickertraining @ RodentFest

Hi everyone!

Rodent Fest is coming up -- May 3rd 2008

One of the BEST places to find mice (and other small pets) for adoption, breeders, rescues, supplies, gifts/crafts, a judged rat show, and more.

I personally have got a table reserved there, and I'd love to meet other mouse people. Please stop by and say "hi"

I breed fancy mice for pet & show with a specialty in manx (genetically tailless) mice. If anyone is interested in getting one, wants to see one, or just wants to talk genetics please stop by.

I'm also embarking on trying to train a mouse to do a few things so I can talk about/demo clicker training. Clickertraining is positive reinforcement-based operant conditioning training witha bridging signal -- and if you want to know what that means, I'm happy to talk to you.

hi funchy ,
I would be curious to know how you get along training the mouse
and what you use a as a marker signal.
a clicker ?... or is the clicker too loud for a mouse ?

I have some mice and rats trained to their names due to treat training. also this looks like a cool fest wish it was closer or I could move for a few days.lol

I have a couple different kinds of clickers. The box clickers (the original ones) are pretty loud. I also have ones with a button that are quieter.

I'll be honest that I didn't get as far as I had liked for this. It took time to get the mice used to being handed a treat & I just ran out of time.

Technically you could use anything as the marker signal. I know people who clickertrain fish use the flash of a flashlight. If you want a sound that isn't too loud, the snap of a metal lid (like the little jars of baby food) is good. Be creative!

I do have very good results in my efforts to clickertrain my dog and my horses. It's a wonderful training system!

Thanks for the kind reply, I know its a wonderful system, I work on a daily basis with the clicker with dogs, being a professional
"dogwhisperer" . I do a lot of therapy work and the clicker is a necessary tool for it.
I juts have no experience clickertraining mice and wanted to get
practical experience exchange. the theory about it is well understood on my side
But I do only train dogs and humans only on a daily basis. you can check in on my website : http://www.positives-hunde-training.com and http://www.hundefluestern.at but currently only if you understand german.
i will make an english version as soon as I have time for it.

back to the mice, in theory it should work fine, abut as they are very small and extremely fast, i guess it requires a very experienced behavior shaper with very accurate timing to have success there with the little rodents.
