mouse behavior question

Hi,

I'm new to your forums. Just discovered them, in fact, while searching the internet for information on mouse diseases. I have a mouse that is doing something strange. I haven't had her (Cricket) that long, a couple of months, and hadn't really noticed her doing this before; it's just something I've seen in the last two or so weeks. She sort of does this strange hopping thing suddenly. Sometimes a series of quick and tiny hops within a few seconds of each other. It's not very frequent, but it's odd. I was wondering if she just gets startled or if this is, perhaps, a symptom of some illness. She seems healthy other than that. Her roommate (Spider) isn't hopping so, for the moment, it doesn't seem to be contagious. I had a mouse who was recently euthanized because she had a very bad case of lymphosarcoma (it was a terrible ordeal), so I am very paranoid about pets being ill. Any idea what the hopping means?

If it what I am thinking, then it is perfectly fine.Sometimes mice get really excited and will hop around the cage.If you have ever seen a guinea pig do it,it is called "popcorning".It is normal and means your mouse is happy and healthy.

Thank goodness! Yes, I meant to write that it very much reminds me of guinea pig behavior. Whew! I'm so glad you responded so quickly. Thank you. I'm glad she's a happy mouse.

Yup, it definitely just sounds like she's playing . I've noticed that behavior in mice as well.

Welcome to PT, by the way!
