my mouse just had babies
She had them today. I am trying to not look at her very much and staying away from the cage. When I do look at her its from farther away. She does not seem to mind this. This is her first litter. She keeps putting some of the babies out of the next box and letting them fall to the floor. When I first noticed she had babies I found out by seeing two babies laying on the floor. They were dead. I don't know if they died because she moved them out of the box and left them or if they were dead to begin with.
Eventually she got the dead babies back into the next box. But than she kept moving them in and out of the box. Like she couldn't decide what to do with them. A large portion of the litter is dead. I have only seen one moving baby so far.

Ok. I saw the mom eating one of the 2 only live babies so I took that one out. I removed the dead babies also. Most of them were half eaten.
I left the only remaining baby with mom and drabbed a little vasoline on her nose before putting her back with her baby. She has been ignoring this last. Somehow I think she will eat it also.
I don't know what to do with the baby I removed. The one with a half chewed face. It's alive and breathing. I'm temporarily put it with a different pregnant mom so it could keep warm. Will having a infant mouse around her induce her milk? or will I need to buy kitten replacement formula? What do I do about its face?

She was probably eating the babies because she felt threatened, they were already sick (in the wild if there is an unwell baby, the mom will eat it,so predators will not be attracted to the nest) or she was not getting enough protein.Nursing mice need alot of extra proteins and nutrients.
I am sorry to hear that tho.
The one with the half eaten face will probably die and is suffering.

It did die.
The last baby is still alive. Every time I look at mom she's on the opposite side of the nest box from the baby. Her and the nanny are always snuggled up in the cover and the baby is always by itself squirming around.
Should the nanny be removed also so she will snuggle with the baby?

If this is her first litter she probably didn't know what to do as a first time mom. This happens alot and happened to me twice with different females. One of the females ended up being a greate mother after that first litter the other ended up eating the second litter as well so I didn't breed her again. Sometimes this just happens and there is nothing you can do about it. I usually keep an experienced mother in with new mothers and they all nurse the babies. You could try to put the baby with the pregnant mother you have or you could take care of it yourself. But if you leave it in the cage with the original mother she will die. The mothe has abandond it and if she returns to it she will kill it.
