Question

My Mummy mouse is being odd...

My mummy mouse is being odd and I'm concerned.

She was a rescue mouse and was pregnant when I brought her home with her 3 sisters (she had been mis-sexed and put with her brothers..)

She gave birth yesterday and until then behaved as I expected, lots of nesting, eating etc. She was separated and put into a large plastic aquarium about a week before she had her litter.

Now she has had her babies she is spending a _lot_ of time apparently trying to get out of the tank, jumping, climbing up the water bottle, trying to shimmy along the edge and falling off...repeat. She does spend time in the nest and I can still hear the pinkies, although I'm not gonna check em yet cos she doesn't know me well.

Any ideas why? Is it because she couldn't explore properly before as she was too fat to jump and climb?
Is the cage with her sisters in too close?
Should I be worried?

i wouldn't be too worried, she's probably just bored. I imagine you don't have a wheel in there so there probably isn't anything for her to do. You could try giving her a wheel for a few hours each day but be careful because once the babies get told enough to crawl around and such they could get caught in the wheel and get hurt.
As long as she's spending time with the babies, everything should be okay. Just check the babies bellies (when you think the time is right since she's not used to you) and see if they have milk bellies.

I managed to peep in when she came out for food and was delighted to see the most perfect milk tummies in the world Still not sure of litter size tho, gonna give her a few days more before I make enough of an intrusion to count them.

She is being a lot calmer now...I guess maybe it was a defensive thing after her new litter were born.

Thank you for replying, I haven't had a mummy mouse for a few years and have been anxious that all goes well.
