New to Fancy Mouse Ownership!
Hello! I have just recently (4 weeks ago )purchased 2 fancy mice. Wheelie and Mimi are their names. Wheelie is the male and Mimi female. They have been going at it like rockets lately, so i'm sure in due time Mimi will have some beautiful babies. If anyone is interested in the babies, let me know, I'm not sure how i'll find them homes.
Anyways.. i'm just checking out the forums and posts and etc, so I thought i'de drop a line!

Congratulations on the new mice. I would suggest if you are not wanting babies you ought to separate the two mice. I dont know much about them otherwise, whether they could be fixed so they can't breed. but if the babies come along, good luck finding homes.
Otherwise, Welcome to Paw-Talk! hope to see you around other sections!

Hi, and welcome to PT
Congratulations on the new mice!!! I agree with Keri, if you don't want more baby mice, separate the male before she has the babies. They will mate again as soon as she finishes giving birth. You can keep the females all together, the males usually fight (I've known cases where there are littermates kept together successfully, but they need lots of space and lots of toys for this to work.). Males can be neutered, but it's costly, and there's a high probability of the mouse not surviving the anesthesia.
Anyway, good luck with your new babies, any other question you have, feel free to ask, there's a couple of mouse-savvy people here. 8) And, well... if it's possible to have some pics of your babies? LOL.. I'm addicted to pics. 8)

Its easy to neuter the male mice, I have a heard of males with females and all of my male mice are neutered. There are many benefits to this: 1. their smell is 95% gone, 2. they are nicer so they can live with other males, 3. no excessive babies that could end up homeless and give heartache
females are more complicated to have their tubes tied, also cancer seems to increase for them once the procedure is done. The cost of neutering the mouse is around 15-30 bucks. Really isnt a bad deal, I get mine done for 15, but I had to look for a vet for awhile, some wanted as much as 75$$!! and had never neutered a mouse, so def research, research!!!
Also, be aware that baby male mice will bred at around 6 weeks!!!! but they should not be neutered at that young, usually when they are 8 weeks it's the best time. But they must be seperated.
good luck with everything, let me know how it goes

I hope you realize what you have gotten into.Seperate the male right away, or they will continue to produce litter after litter, not to mention the young will breed with one another and then you will have a bunch of inbred babies.

How are you planning on doing that? Rats are natural predators to the mice and they will eat them.

Just to let you know, you cannot breed a mouse to a rat or a rat to a mouse.

It's unfourtanitly going to be relly risky for the mother. We will breed them when the females are real young around 6 weeks. My nieghbor tried with a male rat and female mouse and the mother and litter didnt make it. Thats why were going with male mice and female rats this time. I don't expect her to have a litter for a while though

You can't breed rats with mice. They are 2 completely different species.

lol, why didnt the mother survive?
did the male rat eat her before you could try anything
ive SEEN what rats do to mice (wild ones) and its not nice.
and vanilla rat and pinky are absolutely right.
you CANNOT make rat-mouse babies.
its irrisponsible and deadly to even try put a mouse with a rat.
you should look at http://www.ratbehavior.org/RatMouseHybrid.htm

Bengal tiger is Panthera tigris tigris, Siberian tiger is Panthera tigris altaica, lion is Panthera leo. See a pattern there?
Zebra is Equus burchelli, Horse is Equus caballus, Donkey is Equus asinus. Three species that can also interbreed...
They MUST have the same number of chromosomes too.
Now, have you ever heard of a goat/sheep hybrid? They are very very very similar animals. But goats are Capra hircus, sheep are Ovis aries. Also, they don't have the same number of chromosomes (can't rememebr how many, but they differed by 1).
Good article, Monkau! 8)
