Photos - Dozens of Spiny Mice!
No, this is not my own habitat, but that at the Bronx Zoo in NYC.
Dozens of Spiny Mice are in there, and great climbers they are!

I have one in the pocket of my flannel shirt keeping warm right now. He was in a fight and looking bad, with sunken drying eyes - sure signs of dehydration. I applied bacitracin ointment to the wounds (not that bad) and started giving him eyedropper feeding of water and tetracycline. he is picking up quickly after several hours. Glad I checked the tank or he'd have never made it. But I think he will be fine. Every know and then he wakes up and tries to climb out of the pocket. He'll get a deep nest to stay warm in his cage later; he will have to be alone).
I am sure the Zoo bred them, or has professional breeders, or swapped some with other zoos for "new blood" in their stock.

Their displays often change and rotate. One time I saw degus, then no degus, then degus, etc.

I think they rotate either yearly or seasonally. Go to their site and ask! I think the e-addy is pr@wcs.org. I remember once seeing pallid gerbils there, but have not seen them since. I love the Mouse House (whcih is really the Rodent House, and Rodent Enemy house - mongooses, and some snakes).
