Pics of Matisse, my pouched rattie
I've posted these photos on another message board I frequent, but ah well.. hehe.
Matisse is an emin's/african pouched rat. they're related to gambians but are NOT gambians. they are C. emini, not C. gambianus. I keep hearing about people having problems with their pouched rats becoming aggressive and biting.. so I decided to show exactly HOW aggressive my 2 year old UNNEUTERED boy is!
Here he is trying to eat my finger:
and here he is taste-testing my hand for later consumption:
in case you couldn't tell, he's VERY attached to me, hehe.. he even grooms me with the scraping of his teeth against my skin, something only a couple domestic rats I've ever had,... had done.

He is beautiful. Were you posting on a Yahoo message board about him? I kind of think I saw one of those pictures the other day.
How big is he?
Are there any good websites with more info about them?

Gambian or not, all species in the genus Cricetomys fall under the federal ban on sale/transport/import. As do the Graphiurus genus of dormice, Hybomys genus of striped mice, Atherurus genus of brush-tailed porcupines, and two genus of squirrels, Heliosciurus and Funisciurus. Very frustrating, because they do make very cool pets, even if they do look a little weird.

Matisse is so awesome - i've never seen an African pouched rat before. you sure are lucky to be able to have him! he looks very friendly and very attached to you.
i wonder- does he get along with your other rats? or are the species just too different for them to accept eachother?

Matisse is amazing! He's absolutely gorgeous! I'd heard things about them being aggressive too, so nice to hear a different story.
Do they live longer than our 'normal' fancy rats? Do they need ratty company (of their species, of course!)? Sorry for the questions but I'm really interested. I love rodents, I think they're wonderful and sometimes sadly under-rated critters, and I like to learn as much as I can about them.
Thanks for the pics. Feel free to tell us all as much as you like about him.....

These guys are very solitary animals, and although I've heard that you can keep females together, you can't keep males together.
They make such awesome noises.. they churble and chirp like a bird does, and make squeeks and huffy noises as well.
here's a couple old videos of him, one spazzing and one of him walking on his hind legs (yeah one I uploaded before I had my own website in case you can't tell):

no you cannot put them anywhere near other rats.... they will kill them unless they were raised together from TINY TINY things...

him next to a gallon of water for size comparison.
yes they live longer supposedly, he's 2 years 5 months old and definitely not slowing down. they live around 5-7 years I've read/been told/heard.

Wow! He IS big isn't he?!
Thanks for the info and especially for the videos, they were brilliant. He's really amazing.... so handsome! He certainly doesn't look savage at all! I'm guessing you need a pretty tough cage for him?
Give him a couple of scritches from me. I think he's truly fantastic - you must be very proud of him.
