Pregnant Again?

Well I had all of the rats out playing today and I didn't know Sprite was in heat.I had my back turned a few times,as I was feeding geckos and cleaning the cricket tank, while watching the rats.I always do this and never have problems.Well I turned around to find Zephyr and Jellyroll going at Sprite like there was no tommorrow.I only have 4 adults now,the rest are ratlets...altho they are growing rather fast.Raymond is my grumpy rescue rat and I have him seperate,as he always picks fights with the others. But anyway because I didn't know she was in heat (I should of checked beforehand...I usually do),there is a chance she may be pregnant again.

I feel bad,as she is just recovering from her last litter.Maybe it is time to get her spayed.

Anyway I will let you know whether she is or not.And BTW I rather no negative comments about her getting pregnant or me having unaltered males and female play together.Thank you.

wow, that sucks
i wouldnt spay her, because spaying has been found to cause cancer and growths around that area and is much more complicated to do

good luck on whatever happens

I had a very simillar situation occur to me not long ago, a mouse of mind had given birth to 5 mice and when they were 6wks of age, she accidently got pregnant by one of her sons. I figured that it would be a struggle for her second litter (since this would be pretty soon after her first).

And well, what I should have done was to spay her, and abort the second litter early on- it would of saved her life, bc instead she gave birth a second time and it turned out to be 10!!!! and when she gave birth, she had put on some weight, but apparently that was not enough...literally within a matter of a day she became emancipated and very weak, by that time I took the litter away from her but it was far too late...she died within hours.

this is just a grim tale and I thought you should hear it...

good luck with Sprite, hopefully she is not pregnant

Oh I am so sorry Skratikans...what a horrible story... what happened to the young?

As much as I love rats and ratlets,I hope Sprite is not pregnant again. Not only is it stressful on her,but also on me.I am gonna have to look for good homes, which can be a task.I have 15 rats now and do not know if I could keep any of her young...unless I go and get a couple more cages!

I will keep you all updated.

Well, if they were "going at Sprite" as you said, it is more than likely that she is pregant. I highly reccomend you spay her. This way, you would no longer have to have unaltered males and females together (which Im sure you know you shouldt have in the first place?) and also spaying dramatically reduces the occurence of mammary tumors in female rats, which is one the greatest causes of death in female rats. Good luck.

well, the young were 3 days old and it proved to be an impossible task to successfully raise all ten of them, sadly they all died.
