rats and belly buttons?
hi everyone. I was just reading an article that said that rats have belly buttons. I have two hairless rats and, much to their dismay, I flipped them over and searched their bellies for one...but couldn't find any signs! I'm very curious about this...does anyone know anything about rats and belly buttons?

Horses simply love running around. They enjoy flexing their muscles, arching their tails in the air, rising up powerfully on their hind legs, and then thundering off at full speed. In between the gallop strides they buck exuberantly and toss their heads joyfully. After repeating their show a couple of times, they pause for a moment to look around with widely flared nostrils, as if to ask: Has everyone seen us? Aren't we simply fantastic? We urge them to move again. They react on the spot, hooves flying with delight.

I think every animal has a belly button. It's from where the ambilical cord attaches. I don't know why some animals have visible ones but I am pretty sure every animal has had one. Whether or not it becomes flat is dependant to the species...at least thats what I've heard

I don't think they have belly buttons, besides how many pets have been seen being born with an ambilical cord attached to them?

If they don't have ambilical cords, how do they get food inside the mom?

ok, thanks! I should have realized that of course they need umbilical cords...it's weird the belly buttons don't show, though.

Yup, all mammals do, except, I think duck-billed platypus and echidnas, since they are born from eggs. Still animals born from eggs have a mark similar to the bellybutton where the yolk sac was attached, but I can't remember the name of that one.

Just happened to come across this thread and I will state for a fact that rats do have bellybuttons.I got a little hairless rat a couple days ago and happened to come across her bellybutton while inspecting her the other day.I supposes that some rats have innies and outies and my new one just happens to have an outie.

Boris doesn't have any pain with his either. It's something they're born with instead of an injury or tear so it doesn't cause them pain unless they have organs poking through that are actually being pinched or strangulated.
If your little rattie is fairly easy to handle, the best thing to do is turn her upside down and gently push on the lump while sorta moving it back and forth and around a little bit. If it's a hernia then more or likely all or part of it would flatten out. This happens because the lump is actually caused by fat or organ tissue poking through the hernia and it flattens out when you push it back in.
I would take her to the vet if I were you, but our vet said as long as it's not growing, discolored, or causing discomfort that the surgery make cause more risks than the hernia. So just see how serious the vet thinks it is.
