Sigh. I agree with the others. Those conditions look terrible.

You know, maybe she was just worried about cleaning the cage and potentially upsetting the mama. :/

Those babies are at least 4 weeks old. They are ready to be weaned and separated from the mom. Past the first few days you don't need to worry about upsetting the nest.

At least the babies look happy, socialized, and healthy?

OMG can I not post something with out any of you *****ing. the beding is critter care same thing as care freash. The beding is not dirty if you look at the resolution my camera takes dark pictures so its not gonna look right, and if I coulc have lightend them you would see it is not dirty. Also if you payed attenchen to what I write you would have remeber this is one of my welping cages and when the babies are about 2 going on 3 and can move around good they get moved to a bigger cage.
Also in the picture they are only 3 weeks old not 4 and ready to leave mom. The pictures were of them being to gether for a little while longer before I had to sperat them. I anonced that they are sperated or ready to be but i ment they are sperated. They are know now 5 weeks.
This is the welping cag before the babies came the side veiw

This is the top veiw and also the care freash tends to be from a grey color to a icky brown color.

They are only in here till they are 2 weeks old. I have other cages and 10 gal tanks I also us as welping cages till they are 2 weeks of age then they move to a bigger one. Also they were in the cage while I cleaned out their other home before I sperated them.
Also whats wrong with there food they have food. Most of it in the picture was covered up becuase all my rats cover their food diches and also they had a salad while they waited for their new home to be cleaned. And they drug every thing all over. Besides if I made it to long some of you would start complaning that its to long.
No one eals seems to have a problem with the size welping cages I have for my females. And again they are Double Rexes not hairless or considered Mock hairless. Still same line as hairless acording to the hothorn, egeal eye and ARFMA rattery, Just called something diffrent becuase they have hair that growns then falls out then grows and falls out. Look at tattoies pictures on my wes site from 7 weeks to 5 months old if she was a hairless she would have lost her hair the 1st molt.
Now can we get back to the picture they were put on here as an update on her babies not about her food or bedding which is find. Here food is my mix that I make sorta like suebee deit.

I have been handling the babies (when I used to have litters) from day 2 and 3 and it never bothered the mothers. Also as mentioned these babies are just about weaned,so that wouldn't be a good excuse, since the babies NEED to be handled and tamed.

It is a term used usually for dogs, meaning where the mom gives birth and looks after her babies.
Whelping boxes are used often for dogs and their puppies.

excuse me are you saying I dont handel them or havent. They are yes old enough now to be weened but they are only 3 weeks going on 4 in the pictures i dont wean then till the day they hit 5 weeks or a little before.
Some can be done at 4 weeks. They are just pictures of them in the cage that is clean and in there waiting for their bigger cage to be recleaned.
Also Also I leave the nest for a week before I change it all the other bedding is yes replace but the bedding should not be touched or only leave a little of the old nesting there exspecially for 1st time moms.
G you never say anything about my other pets and their care. Please dont start this crap again about what I post. OMG and dont start to rag on my other pets either now, Granted you all are free to have your own OPP. but sometimes its better to keep it to your self.
I could start on you all and rag on you all about some one having 70 rats that they rescued and then yell I am one person I cant take care of all mine which is more. Hello I have my better half you complaining they cant handel there new rat and never will be able to. But thats ok if you think I'm gross at lest I can handel my rats. But no I'll be a nice person, and if you cant say nothing nice then dont at all.
Thank you have a nice day.

thanks vanilla for the clarification!

For my own personal information, if this is a too small whelping cage, what would be the right size? Does a nursing mother need the same stimulation and exercise as when she isn't or is it ok for 4 weeks to not move around a lot?

At 4 weeks old they are running around and active and do need a larger enclosure then that.

Also I never heard the term "whelping" used for rats.

So for the babies, that size is ok until they get active, but the mama? is she ok and not too bored in a small cage?

THIS BETTER NOT BE DIRECTED AT ME.
If you have something to say to me,take it to the PM's.
Not all rats are the same Diamond. And only ONE of my three rats is not handable...so don't even start with me.

No,this is too small for the mother AND the babies.
It doesn't matter if it is used just for the babies. Now that the babies are active,it is way too small.

But were all wrong apparently.
