what do you feed your mice?

i was feeding tropical carnival to my four females until about a month ago when i decided that it's not suitable for a staple food, and instead should be a treat. since then i've bought kaytee's lab blocks (the name escapes me) and i'm pretty sure they aren't touching them. my rats seem to like them quite a bit, but then again my rats are newer and have only been fed that.

i'm getting a little low on the kaytee blocks, and i'm pretty sure i'm going to switch to harlan teklad. hoping i'll have more success with that.

i was thinking maybe i'll feed them reggie rat if that doesn't work, because they seem to like it quite a bit and it at least doesn't have as many seeds in it.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Kaytee really isn't a good food. It has an ingredient in it that causes cancer (I forget the name)

Actually mice need a couple of seeds in their diet because they are usually more active then rats. If you just feed them lab blocks, you will notice how skinny they get. I usually feed my mice a seed mix and some blocks. My rats get mazuri blocks as their staple. They all get treats and other things as well.

If you make up a suebees mix that should be a good staple diet. Just google it.

do you mean that the suebee's would be a good staple for my mice? the only seed in it is sunflower, is that all they need?

jeeze, i thought i was improving by moving to the lab blocks. i thought i was pretty knowledgeable on mice and rats but i have to admit that the food issue is a total weak spot mostly because there doesn't seem to be much of a consensus.

luckily i've only been feeding the kaytee for about a month.

My mice get a seed mix and sometimes I add some of my rat's food (which is homemade and similar to the "Suebee's",but not exactly like it) for a little extra variety.I add a couple of lab blocks, but my mice don't seem to like those much and usually don't tocuh them. They seem to only touch them "if they are in the mood".

I feed my mouse Hamster food, since there's aren't any companies that make mouse-specific food in my area. Since it's mainly a pellet-based prodect, I also buy a tube of assorted seeds, nuts, and other colorful tidbits that are used as Hamster Treats and mix that in as a suppliment. It also makes her more willing to eat the stuff since she isn't too fond of pellets. I also found these adorable cheese wedge treats for rats, and she goes bananas for them! If your mice don't want to eat what you give them, you could try hand-feeding or taking the blocks and putting a bit of peanut butter on them and then slowly putting on less and less until your mice eat the blocks. This will only work if they that go crazy over peanut butter like mine, though.

This is stuff that worked for me, you could try it on your mice, but I don't know if any of my methods will work with you. But yes, don't use Kaytee...it's really bad for mice.
