Yaaayy!! Meet Kenny!!!
So I picked up Timmy's new friend today! The girl was sweet she gave me him, and his cage adn water bottle for free. It's one of those starter gr/rabbit cages. I just carried the cage home, Kenny in tow in my carrier-in-a-dufflebag. The weather sucked but I was on the bus for most of it so meh. So, he's not shy in personality, he's just timid from lack of handling. He likes to hang of the bars of the walls and look out lol.
So he's a black hooded mismarked i think? He has a black head, a black blob on his back and another black blob on his back right haunch. So he's wearing a hood, Kenny always wears a hood (from Southpark), name ensues....
But there's something I'm unsure of. I brought him home, and really looked at him, he's sooo skinny.... he had to have been missing something at that girls house. he's drinking what seems like a lot of water. The bottle he had, the ball thingy feels spring loaded!! So i swapped bottles with timmy, he's strong enough to handle it I think. Kenny's eaten also, and he's sleeping, exploring, sleeping now. He's a little guy, smaller than Timmy by a bit. I give him 6 weeks old. The girl didn't know, he was a gift to her. I didn't really get a great look, but I think she was feeding him half cat half dogfood, cause his coat is NASTY. It looks like two week old unwashed hair. So, i gave him my perfected rat mix of 30% dog kibbles, not even kidding i can see his full belly. So, yeah, I have him, he's safe now. I'll keep you all updated on his weight gain, I'm pretty sure he'll pack a few on.

well this morning he's certainly a bright eyes little curious fella! not even kidding he looks a little better, a little less bony, i dunno, i haven't handled him yet, i'm giving him time, but from sight i see a difference. i figure it was that spring loaded water bottle being too tough for him to get water out of. either way, he's here now adn looking like a curious cutie, pics soon *waits for cam* lol

Congratulations on getting your new rat! I hope everything works out between them. I'm sure it will. Keep us updated on their progress. And, pictures! I love baby/small rat pictures! They are little fluff balls!
Funny you should mention feeding cat and dog food to rats. My Dad feeds his rats some cat food, they love it. It is so funny to watch them when he gives them their portion of cat food. They are so spoiled they would eat their rat food unless that is all they have left. They would rather eat the bones, vegetables, etc. that he gives them. I must say, he is doing something right. They are the biggest rats I have ever seen. Very healthy. (I'm sure it helped that when the two mom's (which were mine) were pregnant (right out of the store) I gave them rat vitamins, tons of fresh vegetables and fruits.)

a treat of cat food every once in a while is fine, but as a consistent thing, its really not good for them, as its strictly protein, and too much protein is detrimental to our rats. They can cause a protein sensitivity (scabs and itchiness over their body), can reduce the length of their life, affect the growth of tumours, etc. Thats why dog kibble is used in rat mixes as it is more omnivorous like our pet rats are. A lean athletic rat is much much healthier, I am learning and following this strategy more now with my youngest group of girls.
Poor Kenny, give him a good diet, lots of love, water and exercise and he should be fine...he sounds wonderful
Poor baby was probably a bit dehydrated from that difficult waterbottle.
Looking forward to pics so I can age him for ya.
