Zeolite granules for litter?

Hi to all!

I'm new and this is my first post. We have two sweet ratty-rats (both girls), Cookie and Bear. We have had them since they were 5 weeks old and they are now 5 months old. I love these little cuties!

I was wondering about using Zeolite for their litter box. I have seen it used in cat litter and as an ammonia reducer in aquariums. My concern is not knowing if the ratty's would eat the zeolite and would be harmed? It does not clump, but I don't know how inert it is if consumed.

Any thoughts you have would be most appreciated!

Thank you!

Shari

I do not know that specific brand, but I personally would not use any clay/rock type cat litter.Mainly because it can be dusty.

A good brand to use is "Yesterdays News"...it is a pelleted paper product. It is sold in the cat litter aisle.

Or you could use aspen.I usually mix aspen and YN together.

I couldn't find a whole lot of info on the zeolite but from what I did read it would not be suitable for rats. Vanilla had some good suggestions. I personally use carefresh but only in my rats litter boxes, I just line the rest of the cage with fleece, towels or old tshirts.

I dislike carefresh!
I stopped using it after I had a rat get allergic, but I just got a big bag of it from someone,so I started using it and well...I HATE the way it smells when the rodents pee on it.
