Question

Chinchilla won't eat....

Hey! I have a female chinchilla that is about 8 months old. She never has really eaten that much but now she wont eat any of her real food. When I put fresh food in her dish every night she just goes over and dumps all of it out?? The only thing she will eat are rosehips and a little of her hay which obviously she cant live off of forever. I have started to notice that she is loosing a lot of weight....So does anyone have any suggestions on how to get her to eat enough, and exactly how much should she be eating a day? Should I bring her to a vet? Thanks so much for any advice!

I might take her to the vet to test for parasites if nothing else. In the meantime I'd make a mush of her pellets, and add just a drop of honey or karo syrup to make it sweet for her. Try to syringe feed her.

I'd also be concerned about tooth problems and ask the vet to x-ray at the very least, examine under isoflourane if she's stable enough.

Good luck to you!

I would tell you everything that Jade already has, plus to add Nutri-Cal(available in the dog or cat section of your local pet store) or Dyne.

I had a chin that was like that started not eating much.I took a look inside and noticed her teeth were too long and had to be trimmed by a vet who used isoflourane.I got to watch and help with the procedure.
I wish you lots of luck with her.sending ~~~~~~Healthy Chin vibes ~~~~~your way
