Hi all, I run a Rodent Rescue Centre, & recently re-homed a pair of
'Chins' with my nextdoor neighboor. One of them has developed
Hard skin on yhe underneath of hind feet. Can anyone please enlighten me? It doesn't seem to bother the him, & is still active, eating, drinking. He seems to be quite ' normal '

It's most likely caused from them being in a cage with a wire bottom - thier feet can get sores or become rough if they don't get a chance to rest them. I would suggest adding some pine boards or other things for them to sit on rather than the wire and you can get Protecta-Pad® Cream to put on thier feet.

Leap N Ledges are great for chewing and a break from the mesh:

I also lay pieces of cardboard on my cage floors and sea grass mats are great too.

Hi Christi,THX for info, but have to add, their cage has two shelves & box. I suspected 'BumbleFoot' & we put Straw & shavings on cage floor.

I would suggest the same thing Christi has suggested. We had the sore feet with one of our chins we used Protect-a-pad cream and got him off of the wire he is now fine.

Hi, 'Christi' Bumble foot is a nailment Rodents can get though being on 'wire' all the time, its not disimilar to 'bed sores'!
Hardened, dry, Sometimes inlamed pads on feet!

I have a chin that I just noticed also has hard skin on his feet...he has NO wire in his cage. I have started to use protect a pad and hopefully this will help. I wonder what else causes this?

EyesOfTXChins is on a distinguished road
When I had all wire bottoms that happend to my chins. Now that I got new cages without the wire on the floor and pine shavings it cleared right up! :blob1: That should work!
