Alfalfa every day? Really? I hate loose hay - but now that I use the hay baskets it's not near as bad so I try to give it a few times a week. As for alfalfa cubes, I put a handful in once a week.

Ah! Two key words you left out, replace and mixed! LOL First, why do you replace them? Second, why give loose hay in addition to the cubes?

I replace them because they throw them into the shavings and second I use both because they don't eat all of their cubes but will eat the loose hay. The loose hay is timothy, the cubes are mixed. I could leave a cube in there for a week and it only be half gone but when I put in loose hay the bowl is empty in the morning.

I use both the cubes and the loose.I feed them hay everyday.I buy timothy and alfalfa in the loose hay a little of each in the very magnificent hay cubes that Christi makes. They also like the timothy/alfalfa cubes.
Has anyone ever tried the oat hay cubes mine love them too.

I use hard pressed alfalfa cubes and loose cut alfalfa and loose timothy when I can get it.
I was reading an interesting article the other day about the type of hay that is best for chinchillas. Lani Ritchy's article spoke about using two types of hay for the benefit of the teeth. Coarse hay for grinding back and forth and finner, softer hay for up and down chewing. This helps to prevent spurs and keeps the teeth evenly worn. Using alfalfa and timothy or oat would fill that need. It made sense to me, what do you all think?
