Hi KTx, I am not trying to be rude in any way, but didn't you post that you're rehoming your degus because you're in college and aren't home enough to take care of them. Chins are a tremendous amount of work. Just curious

I hope I don't offend you in any way.

hi

yes you are right. I am not looking into getting the chinchillas for a good month or so (by which time i will be living back at home!) i am just asking around as i am interested in keeping them in teh future and was wondering how much white and mosaic chinchillas are able to be found around and about.. and i just feel that at the moment the degus are not getting all the attention that they need!

I see

Chins are very social and need tons of love and attention. They're great animals and very rewarding.

They are usually very common. I talked with five breeders before I picked mine out and every one had tons of mosaics. It may vary by location though.

One bit of advice - do not buy a chinchilla from a pet store. They are not usually quality animals and have underlying issues. I bought my first one at Petco and if you'd like, you can read all about my heart break in the "Optimus", "PetCo" and "Help" thread. You are way better off finding a good breeder and buying one from them. Petco and most pet stores are insanely expensive. I bought my standard gray for $150. The breeder I use now charges $50. In addition to saving money, you also know the genetics of your chin and have the peace of mind that they were treated and weaned correctly.

I love mosaics, they are gorgeous.

I bring my new baby home next week. He is actually a black velvet. I found the breeder I really liked and told her I wanted a mosaic baby. So, I went over to her house and looked around and the mosaic babies were gorgeous....but....there was a little black velvet baby that ran up to the cage squaking and let me hold him right away. He stole my heart He was about four weeks old then and now he's almost ready come home with me. I visit him all the time. I'm acutally going today to see him I posted a thread "pics" that has pictures of him in his cage.

Maybe if you find a breeder you can pick out a little baby that needs a few weeks until it can go home. Its great to build a bond with them and watch as they grow up.
