Outsmarted by my chins!!!!
I am so amazed sometimes at the silly but clever things my chins do.
A few days back I was feeding my chins. I hadnt been feeling very well and one of my ebony pairs was standing in the front of their cage shakin the bars. I went to see what was wrong and figured I had overlooked giving them their supplement so I gave it to them. The next day the same thing happended, now mind you I have 55 cages to feed, but I thought wow I am not doing well at all so I checked all the cages again to be sure I got everone. I have been feeding large quantity of cages for the past 12 years and its never been a problem. Any way the next day was cage cleaning day, I just got in some nice aspen bedding to use for my kids. I proceeded to feed everyone after the cages were done. The ebony pair was raising havock in their cage. I checked on the rascals and they had taken 90% of their bedding and covered their food dish and sat on it so I wouldnt see that they had food. Wow am I a dummy!!! Out smarted by my chinnies!! They have been playin me.

Wow. I hope my chins don't learn that! I get the "That treat has a defect I need a new one" from my oldest chin.

Well, we've all been played by our chins at one point or another. At least you can laugh at it. Wait until they learn to open the cages! (Muad'dib has gotten the cage door open once and since then, I've added twist ties to keep the doors closed even if he undoes the latch.)

In all my years of working with chins they have always been clowns about the treat trick. Some of my chins will throw down the treat to let me know thats not what they want but they are actually saying: I'll pick this one up later and eat it when your not looking! This is the first time I fell for the "we didnt get fed our supplement trick".
As for the cage doors I make my cages and buy latches from Damars Equiptment Co.. The latches are 35 cents each and my chins have never opened them. If anyone needs these and wants more info about them send me a pm. I can send them to you at cost plus postage if you like or I can direct you to Damars to purchase them yourself.

Debbie,
Are those latches the ones that are spring loaded and you squeeze to open them up...yeah, I'm a DaMar's customer too! I've never used those before, but I have thought about it a couple of times. I find though that if you set the other latches just right, you can get enough tension in them so that the little fluffballs can't get them open no matter how hard they shake the cage, and my violet can really shake the cages good!

Keep your chins in!!!
The attached pic is the one I am taking about. I use a j-clip pliers to attach it to the door. The hook end should always face down or the rick-a-chea action by your chins can open it .

Oh that is just classic!!! I don't know of any animal that doesn't have the "treat trick" hiding up their fur! My Skittles does the throw down trick to me all the time. I always fall for it!

I'm glad someone put up a picture, that is the kind that Muad'dib got open. I didn't see him do it, but I walked in one morning and the cage door was wide open and he was just sitting there looking out the door. (It was the upper door and he was about 3 months old, so he didn't go exploring.) The appropriate part of the clip was facing down, but there was only one clip for the smaller door. I think he pulled on it with his teeth until he could disengage the grip. I wouldn't panic, because it couldn't have been from shaking the cage. It was a wooden cage with a mess front panel with doors that I staplegunned on. Now we have a different cage with at least two clips per door, but I still throw a twist tie on there just in case. He's a smart little devil.
