Question

Rust-Oleum - Cold Galvanizing Compound - SAFE?????

Hi,
I read an article on another website about cleaning your cages. In this article, the author suggests using "Japlac", a non toxic paint, on your cage "to bring it back to the nice shiny clean wire, like it was when you first bought or made it". She says that it "acts like it is part of the original wire, so it is not like a seperate coat of paint that could peel off."
I wanted to pretty up my cages so I went looking for this stuff. I couldn't find it. Instead I bought "Rust-Oleum Cold Galvanizing Compound" at Lowes. This spray is for the recoating of galvanized steel. It says on the can, "unleaded - Safe for use on children's toys, furniture, etc."
Is this the same thing as Japlac? Does anyone know if it is safe? Actually, I'm not planning to do the wire mesh of the cages, just the pans. I bought them used and there is some rust in the "potty corners". Does anyone have anyother suggestions what I could use or where I can find Japlac????
Thanks in advance!

No paint is totally safe, But if you choose to use it the cage must sit for about one week to dry completely then you will need to wash the cage to remove any overspray residue.

A safer way to touch up cages is to get a good wire brush, mix 1/2 cup bleach with 1/2 cup laundry soap and two cups water then scrub! let sit with the soap solution for about 15 minutes, rinse rinse rinse. It's easiest out side using the hose. Do not substitue the laundry with any other soap, most soaps when mixed with bleach cause toxic gases. Laundry soap is designed to be used with bleach. Yes even dish soap should never be mixed with bleach. Wear rubber gloves while doing this so your fingers don't curl up!
