X-treme Diarrhea

My 15 year old (going on 16 year old) chinchilla has had pretty bad diarrhea for a while. When it first started I took him to the vet and they ran all kinds of tests and all were negative for everything. So I took him home and did the burnt toast extra hay sometimes no pellets (just hay), and children's kayopectate. The diarrhea will quit and then come back. I use filtered water with all the chins and clean their cages quite throughly.... Question is what do I do? He isn't losing weight or having any other problems. It's just kind of alarming for your chin to have liquid poop. Anyone know what could be the cause of this? He's the only chin who has it. I took him to the vet yesterday and the results were still negative on anything being wrong.... ARGH!!!

Take away his pellets and give him shredded wheat, you can also give him some unflavored pedialyte in his water bottle if hes drinking. I had the same problem last summer and had to use neomix to get my chins over it.

He's eating and drinking normally. The vet even said he wasn't dehydrated. She was simply perplexed as to why he kept having loose stools.... What's neomix?

Her vet said he wasn't dehydrated. If I'm not mistaken, sugar can make it worse.

I hope you find out whats wrong and get him fixed up soon!

It's just frustrating because otherwise he's a completely healthy chinchilla... Does anyone else have an extremely old chinnie? Could it be because of his age?

Sorry this is late, I've been out of town.

I would add a probiotic. He's probably been like this for so long, his gut doesn't know how to keep the natural balance in check.

If that doesn't work, I'd look at the neomix like Sassy suggested. I think you can get it at feed stores, etc.

Umm...would someone please tell us what neomix is? I have never heard of it before and I'm really curious as to what it is and what it does to help with diahrrea.

Thanks!

(This is Jade btw. I'm at work.)

I believe Dave Woods recommended it to Sassy, if I'm not mistaken? Sassy? Can you clarify?
