Zinc Toxicosis

My vet just warned me about something. In Elvis' cage we have hardware cloth on the bottom, since we built it ourselves. She wanted to make sure he wasn't chewing on it, because she currently has a patient with Zinc Toxicosis. Thankfully he hasn't ever done so, but I replied and asked to make sure the galvanized wire was ok because they regularly chew on that. I'll be sure and let you all know.

Just wanted to warn you, so you can keep an eye on your chinnies if you built your own cage!

This is a problem with birds. Zinc is toxic to them. I drove my FIL nuts when he wanted to make them a play pen and told him he could not use any zinc nails or screws. Galvanized wire should be fine but I will be interested to hear what the vet says!
