They're illegal to own in Staten Island, Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn I know plenty of people who own them that live in those areas tho. One that lives in Brooklyn, actually

what happens if your neighbors rat you out? forget for a minute that i grew up in Bensonhurst :-)

if you're neighbors are that nosy and rat you out, they'll(animal control) take them away from you--I believe you can be fined. Not sure if there's jail time--in CA there is. You'd think they'd throw the real criminals in jail
I was stranded at a police station in Brooklyn several years ago WITH my ferrets--they didn't bother me They actually enjoyed having them there
Now that Giuliani(sp?) is out of office, we can hopefully get their legal status changed--he was a HUGE hinderance to them becoming legalized
