Hedgehogs As Pets--a Sticky Situation?

HEDGEHOGS AS PETS--A STICKY SITUATION?
Once dubbed the "Superpet of the '90s," African pygmy hedgehogs have recently become even more popular, thanks to TV commercials featuring the irresistible critters promoting video games. "Unfortunately, like the fate of dalmatians following the craze spawned by 101 Dalmatians, many hedgehogs purchased on impulse are discarded or abandoned when the reality sets in that they are not the ideal pet for every family," says the Hedgehog Welfare Society's Donnasue Graesser, Ph. D.

To find out what the Connecticut-based group is doing to protect these misunderstood animals, check out "A Haven for Hedgehogs" in the current issue of ASPCA Animal Watch magazine. If you don't receive the magazine as an ASPCA member benefit, you can read the article online at ASPCA.org, along with a selection of other features from the issue.
