House for hedgie - Paw Talk

I am thinking of getting my first pygmy. I have read somewhere that they don't neccesarily have to be housed in a cage. A box, similar to a dog/cat igloo type box would do, with a toilet nearby... Has anyone kept a hedgie this way, giving him a free run of the house?

I havent had any hedgies but i think they are adorable.
If you get one you know we would love to see pics!

I know someone that housed a hedgie this way but they didn't give him free roam of the house, they had him in a room of his own. Giving any small animals complete free roam of the house could be dangerous because they can crawl under things and get hurt, which wouldn't be good.

Oh, I did not mean the whole house. An open plan apartment is more like it, where I could see him/her..

We've always used sterilite bins connected by plumbing tubes. The bins contain any mess and provide safety and security for the hedgehog. Good luck though. I would love to see pictures when you have it all made.

I have mine in bins also with tubs connecting them.

Could you use one of those plasic bottomed cages that they sell for things like Guinea Pigs maybe...I have one of those for my two Guinea Pigs and it was not too terribly expensive and I just bought a larger cage for my rabbit who really loves it and I was considering getting the girls a larger cage too espically if this lady still has any she is trying to get rid of. (found some at a yard sale not too long ago.) But just out coursity sake would something like that if it had something nice and soft like fleece padding it down to make it not so cold be a good home for a hedgey? I am not sure of the exact measurements off the top of my head.

I don't mean to keep posting in old threads to be honest I am just curious about people that own Hedgies but I had no idea that on here there were so few that...did I am not trying to cause issues are sorry!

hehe no issues, just letting you know you might not get a response i think there are a few hedgie owners here they just don't post as much if you start a new thread you may get a better response

I guess this should teach me to look more closely at the dates on these threads but half the time I am checking this place between my classes, while doing homework so its not that surprising I get distracted.
