FIGHTING PD's, IT JUST DOESN'T STOP!!!!
Everyone, I need your help bad!!!
I know right now it's still rut, but my two girls are fighting BAD!!
Right at this moment, I have one girl in the cage, and the other girl in their kennel. I've been told that I have to seperate them since Peanut is the dominent one, and Precious is the passive one. Even when I do this, it still does not work. I live in a condo and I do not have enough space for two cages. I've had these girls housed together for the past 3 1/2 years and nothing like this has ever happened. This happens on and off, but lately all the time. This fighting has happened not when it was rut as well. What happens is Peanut will make an aggessive noise (chattering), and Precious will start yelping and will not stop. Peanut keeps teasing her but aggressively and it's really starting to get bad. I do not want to come home and one of my babes is hurt or dead. The weird thing is, Peanut used to be so sweet when I first got her, the past few years she's not so sweet anymore. She will let you rub her, but she hates to be held. This is really a strain on me, my pd's and my family. I don't know what to do. This is the second time that I've had a dominant pd. My first one, I had to find him a home. I have a feeling that I might have to do the same for Peanut. PLEASE HELP ME and give me some advise. What really stinks, I'm in the process of opening up my own business, and I have that to worry, plus this with my girls. It's not fun when you can't even play and hold your pet, especially when I put all of my love into her.

Are they actually attacking each other or just chittering? If they are physically attacking, then please, by all means, keep them separated! Try putting them back together every other day or so, and closely supervise their time together. If the chittering and fighting stops, then they might be ok. If they continue to chitter and fight, then separate them again. That is the best advice I can offer for now. They are most likely in rut, but take heart, it should pass fairly soon.

There was a thread on here, I believe posted by Wendy that there was a debate over fixing your pd vs. not fixing it.
This is exactly the reason to fix a pd. Just because one is fine for 1-2 years without rutting does not mean it will happen. Since they are being kept in captivity, rut season is gonna be thrown all off and they can go through rut like symptoms throughout the year.
Now your PD's are a bit older and surgery is slightly more risky. Please do not just get rid of them, cause they will do no better at anyone else's place. They are used to you. Please forgive them cause they cannot help it, its harmones. I can bet ya' that if you get BOTH (I dont care who is aggressive and who isnt, they both need to be done) fixed, they will return to their sweet old selfs.
So Wendy, and anyone else who questioned the choice of fixing... here is a good example why you should. Now this poor girls pd's are already 3 1/2 yrs old and need to be fixed.

How was that rude??? I was simply stating the seriousness of getting PD's fixed. Is it not the purpose of this forum to educate on what is best for animals?? Here is a prime example of the consequences. I have seen people get jumped on here for WAY less and people be way blunt and rude because we are talking about the quality of life for our pets.

I just wanted to let all of you know, that I had both of my PD's Precious & Peanut spayed along time ago, I forgot to metion that in my post, sorry!!! I am very knowledgable about pd's, but I don't know everything, that's why I'm asking for other inputs. A few years ago, I had a pd named Bubba-Bear, who of course I had neutered, and he was an very dominant pd. Even with him fixed, he was VERY mean to myself & family, and my other PD which is Precious who is just the sweetest thing. So, I had to give him up, he was biting everyone. He has been living in a wonderful home shared with another pd, which is his brother. I never said I was giving away BOTH of them. And I just said that I hope that I don't have to give Peanut away as well, I didn't say that I was going to do that!! It's very frustrating when you have a pet for over three years, you give them tons of love, and you can't even play or hold them because they are dominant and aggressive. That's why I'm asking for HELP! I just wanted to clarify that.

Well thats good to know. At least they won't go through full rut. But we all know that it doesn't always relieve all symptoms. It is strange though. Are you sure they are fighting like to the point they would hurt each other? I have one that is real laid back, and one aggressive. They play so rough it looks like they are fighting... even bite each other on the back of the neck till one yelps. But it ends after about half an hour. There will always be one alpha in a group. I just got bit BAD by my alpha female. Down to the bone.

The fighting is not play fighting. Peanut is tormenting Precious. Peanut gives an aggressive chatting and look to Precoious, while Precious is in the corner acting like she's defending her life, with her tail up yelping SUPER load. By the time she's done with her yelping, she so exausted.

No thats not what I am saying. Fixing them helps alleviate rut symptoms. Not all. If her pd's were not fixed it could be much much worse where her pd's feel 10x more miserable than they may be feeling as of now.
My pd when she decided to hit full rut at 2 was literally almost sick from feeling so bad. Not eating much and physically felt bad. Her vagina swelled up and protruded to the point she wouldn't even sit down. She didn't want to be touched by anyone. Also may I add fixing them can help to prevent cancer.
Fixing your pd's could help them live a longer, and happier life. It's rare that after fixing pd's continue to be as how babypd's have become. My pd's show little to NONE rut symptoms as most do.
babypd's is a rarer occasion and there could be something else going on with them, or she was one of the few unlucky that fixing did not help as much as needed.

While I agree that fixing is the best thing to do when you have an experienced vet, I will still keep my opinion that it's just not worth the risk for MY pd's to be spayed by an inexperienced vet. If someone else chooses to do so with an inexperienced vet then that's just fine. I'm not saying that having them spayed is a bad thing. I'm saying that it's not worth the risk for me when they can still be moody and have symptoms of rut anyway. Babypd is the 3rd person I've heard of going through this with SPAYED animals.

Do you realise how pathetic this paragaraph is, Misty?
*sigh* I did not question the choice, I actually made a decision *nod* and explained the reasons behind that decision... which bit do you not understand, Misty? Or is this the ideal thread for you to blow your own trumpet and rant how right you are, and try and make me feel bad, or anyone else who had a valid reason for NOT spaying their prairie dog?
I deliberated long and hard over having Rosie spayed or not... wind your neck in, Misty darling and stop being so bloody rude and arrogant, it's very unattractive -- Rosie is a healthy and well balanced furry and yes, maybe further down the line I might wish I could turn back the clock... time will tell!

I wish I could help you babypd... I send cyber hugs to you instead and hope your furries sort themselves out sooner rather than later.

I am sorry if y'all take what I say as arrogance and being rude, for I do not mean it that way. There is nothing I can do to change that. I from my experience am just trying to help other exsisting pd owners to know the importance of it and health reasons for it. If you decide against it, that is fine. But I will still always take a stance on getting it done. For I have been in a place where I had wish I had done it and am trying to prevent you and your pd's from going through it.
I am saddened how when I try to help wether blunt or not people get their feathers all ruffled and attack me. So that is fine, I will post nothing more about my personal experiences on it and my stance to get your pd's fixed, cause obviously it is taken offensive.

I'm going to ask that we now please push aside the issue of spaying, since Erika's pd's are already spayed, and try to think of other things that may help her.
