Kasey had a stroke
Kasey, one of my pd's had a stroke last night. She's very weak and wobbly and the vet said there's nothing that can be done to help her. I'm sick to my stomach thinking that she's not going to survive. She's still eating and drinking, but not very much.
Please keep Kasey in your thoughts and prayers.

Oh no, Scarlette. I'm so sorry. I'll pray that she gets better for you.
How did they determine it was a stroke? Typically animals don't have strokes like we think of them, but throw clots elsewhere, like to the spine or legs. Do they have her on blood thinners to try to dissolve the clot at all? I've not heard of this in PDs, so I'm not sure what they'd put her on.

Oh Hon, I am so sorry. How experienced is your vet with PD's? Somewhere I think I have the phone no. of Lynda Watson's vet and Lynda's no. too. If you want I can dig them out, they might be able to help your vet with other options.
I'll be thinking of you and Kasey.
Have you got any Critical Care?
I would let her have some Sweet Potato baby food too.

My vet has no pd experience. I called her and told her the symptoms....Kasey was very weak in the rear end and wobbly. When she tried to sit up to eat hay she would fall over. It seemed her back legs weren't working properly. I separated her from Karmen in case they tried to fight, made her a nice soft bed near the water bottle and kind of propped her up so she could eat hay. I went to the store and got some sweet potato baby food and syringe fed her every few hours. She seemed to be doing better than Thursday night and today she seems almost normal! She's still a bit weak but she's sitting up normally to eat her shredded wheat and hay. I guess I'll just keep doing everything the same until she's better. I have no idea what happened!
Catherine, thanks for pm'ing me Lynda's phone number. I really appreciate it and will give her a call if Kasey starts to get bad again.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers. They seem to be working!

Rather than it have been a stroke, could she not have fallen and hit her spine, or even eaten something that could have been toxic?
From a personal point of view, you do need to seek guidence from someone with heaps of medical pd experience... if it was indeed a stroke, you need to be prepared in case she suffers another one. As for your vet not knowing anything about pd's, she must be able to perform a medical, check the heart, take blood tests for instance - my new vet hasn't had any medical experience with prairie dogs but I'd still visit him and have him perform a medical if something like this had happened to Rosie.
I'm so sorry this has happened, you must have been very scared *hug*
