Need Help!

We have two prairie dogs - a male & a female- that we've had for just over a year. We are now having a HORRIBLE indoor fly problem that seems to be originating from their cage. Their cage is cleaned several times a week, but we still cannot get rid of the flies. This has been going on for several months now. It is disgusting and has gotten so bad that we are considering re-homing our sweet little babies! Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what worked?

We use corn cob bedding in the tray that slides out and shredded brown paper that we get from Petsmart inside the cage.

That's a great idea. Not sure why I didn't think of it. Even though you don't have PDs, any suggestions for new bedding?

Try using nothing but Timothy Hay - my prairie dogs are now 12 years old - and that's all they've ever had for bedding. I also give them small pieces of fleeces to make their beds with.

I've had the bug issue with a guinea pig when I used Aspen in her cage. Since I switched to CareFresh - we don't have them anymore.

Use the hay inside the cage - and just let the tray catch the hay dust or anything they kick out. They love to eat in bed - so it's a double win - with timothy.
