Need/Want PD buddy for 3 yr old Male PD
I have a 3 yr old pd that needs a PD buddy. Is it safe to introduce a new PD to him? He grew up with a PD his age. I got two at age 7 weeks but one got out and escaped out the doggy door and died in the sun (used to live in AZ)
If it is safe to add another PD when are babies available? April? and were is a good place to purchase one? I currently live in MD.
Thanks

I'm going to pm you the email where I got mine from. She deals with Lynda Watson humane captured pups. She's a very nice lady. I don't think pups are available until May, but you can check with her and see when she gets them.

All the DNR required was one hunting license per PD. |

I don't understand why you would need one hunting license per PD a person can only have one hunting license in MD and that is used to hunt wildlife not so that you can house a animal. I live in MD. also, last summer I found a place in West Virginia that sold PD's but decided to check into the laws here in MD first and was told if I get caught with a PD I would be fined and the animal would be confiscated (possibly euthanized)

I was told directly by DNR that they are legal as long as you have one hunting license per PD. I had one and my wife had one (license) the reasoning behind it, and this is not my thought it was exactly what DNR told us:
You need One hunting license per PD, This gives the owner of the license to take ONE PD from the. Wether you kill it hunting or take it home and keep it it doesn't matter.
I know it seems strange, but this is what was told to us.
Same thing in AZ, needed hunting license. And we had a vet and they would not do the "Fix" until we had the hunting license so that it was legal.
Weird stuff.

I would definitley get a second opinion on that. Call a different DNR office and see what they say. Hunting licenses are for hunting........and don't mention that you already have a PD or they might come knocking on your door. I would hate to see your other one get confiscated and euthanised.

I just got off the phone with the DNR and Prairie Dogs are not allowed as pets in the state of Maryland with or without a license.
As stated by myself, Scarlette and the DNR a "hunting license" is for hunting wildlife. The Housing of a Prairie Dog is not considered hunting.
Sorry!

Prairie dogs are not legal in some states and counties. The following list is up to date as of October 2001. AK Not Allowed AL Allowed AR Allowed (must have proof of sale) AZ Not Allowed CA Not Allowed CO Not Allowed CT Allowed DC Not Allowed DE Not Allowed FL Allowed GA Not Allowed HA Not Allowed IA Allowed (must have proof of sale) ID Allowed (with permit) IL Allowed (with permit) IN Allowed KS Allowed (cannot buy or sell) KY Allowed (with permit) LA Allowed MA Not Allowed MD Not Allowed ME Allowed (with permit) MI Allowed MN Allowed MO Allowed MS Allowed MT Not Allowed NC Allowed ND Allowed (with permit) NE Allowed NH Not Allowed NJ Not Allowed NM Allowed NV Allowed (with permit) NY Allowed OH Allowed OK Allowed OR Not Allowed PA Not Allowed RI Allowed SC Allowed SD Allowed TN Allowed TX Allowed UT Not Allowed VA Not Allowed VT Not Allowed WA Allowed (with permit) WI Allowed WV Allowed WY Allowed (with permit) To determine if a pet prairie dog is legal where you live: 1. Call the appropriate government agencies in person. Using the internet for research is a good place to start, but for current and complete information on the status of your chosen species, check with the proper agencies. 2. Start with your local government - call city hall or your town or county office, and ask if there are any relevant laws against your pet. 3. Your local officials may be able to tell you the status of your pet locally as well as state, province, or country wide status. 4. If there are no local laws, and local officials are not sure about the status on a wider scale, they may be able to direct you to the appropriate agency to check with. 5. Before going to the state/province/country, check with your local health department, as sometimes regulations fall under their jurisdiction. 6. Check with state/provincial agencies. Hopefully the local officials could tell you which agency has jurisdiction, but it may fall under agriculture, fish and game, natural resources, wildlife, health, etc. 7. Keep calling until you find the right agency/person who can give you a difinitive answer. Sometimes permits are required for legal species, so make sure you find out if there are any special permits or licenses required.

I know it seems odd. But I even went to a DNR office in AZ and they again let me know that a Hunting license for AZ would allow me to kill or take one from the wild. Odd stuff. Not saying right or wrong. Just how it was handled. The Vets in AZ also know this as they won't work on them until you have the hunting license to make it legal. Not arguing...just what I experienced

Not arguing but a hunting license is used to hunt not house a animal. My hubby and sons are all avid hunters and looking through their hunting books prairie dogs are NOT listed in it.
Just looking out for you and your prairie dog, there is the possibility that your prairie dog could be confiscated and euthanized.

Thanks for putting up a list of States that allow and don't allow prairie dogs. I get e-mails from people all the time asking me if prairie dogs are legal in their state. I noticed that the list said you need a permit in Illinois to keep one. I called several state and city officals before I got my girls, and everyone of them said to me that prairie dogs are legal to have , but since they are a wild animal and they are from another state eco-system, you must not let them out of the house, they must be in a cage at all times inside the home. I asked them do I need to register for a permit or certificate, and they said no as long as they are indoors. They all told me this same thing. There are alot of pd owners in Illinois that I know, none are aware of a permit. I know that you need a permit to sell them in Illinois, not to have one as a pet.

I forgot to mention in my last post that Christopher Robin is such a cute little pd babe!!! Whatever about all the illegal stuff, you didn't know, just have fun with your pd and just be very careful in your state & town so nothing happens.
