Pooder the PD is real sick

Well, Pooder my prairie dog is real sick. It started Thursday and he would jump out of his terra cotta pot (bed) and stand in the middle of the cage, his body would contract and he would grunt as if in pain. We took him to the vet and health wise there was nothing found, and his stool sample was fine. Well it got worse and he has been doing it more often. This morning he had blood coming out of his thingy. This narrowed down what was wrong with him. We took him to an emergency vet since it's sunday, and he either has a bladder infection or kidney stones. Which I've had kidney stones and they are excruciating. When he is making that jerking a grunting noise he's trying to pee. When he was in the vets office he started having an episode and actually passed a mucusy clot out his urethra. OUCH! His infection is non-bacterial so antibiotics probably won't work, but he's on Baytril anyway. And the doc gave him a cortizone shot to help with pain. I have to call my normal vet in the morning (which might I add is the top exotic doctor in Texas, Dr. Miller) and he might want to do further testing. So as of now I am just watching him close, he's drinking water... but still no pee. But his bladder isn't swollen so he's somewhat OK unless this happens. Pray for him and wish me luck guys!

Update

Today Pooder is still showing no signs of getting better. He seems to be straining even harder than before (didn't think that was possible) to pee. My regular vet wants him brought in today for x-rays for stones or blockages. Unfortunately they have to anestisize him to get a good x-ray. They may keep him depending on what they find. I'll keep y'all posted on the results of this visit.

The worst senario that I thought could happen did...

Pooder went back to the vet today to get x-rayed. I just spoke with the doctor, and he has a very large kidney stone. He has to have surgery to remove. :'( In comparison to humans it would be equal to the size of a fist to him! Poor guy! I know he was in such pain. I've had an insy weensie stone and it was excruciating! I didn't want him to have to go through surgery... I am so sad.

Has he had surgery yet? I have to tell you, your little guy has been on my mind since I've read this. I've been so worried for him. I know how it is to get attached to these loving little creatures and I'd be worried sick if this were to happen to mine. I'm worried sick about yours!!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!

[size=3]Sorry I haven't posted about him. I've been kinda holding out to make sure he does OK. He had his surgery yesterday morning. His incision is real big. He was so pitifull the first day home, all sedated and stuff. He seems to be feeling better today, he is on antibiotic for 10 days and gets his sutures out in 10 days. He's been sleeping a lot, he's been through a lot. Thank you for caring! I have been a mess! I was so stressed I was crying over everything, even stupid stuff. Of course money had some to do with it. But it's OK.

Well, Pooder is sick again... bad this time I think. He had seemed all better since the last time and now he is straining again constantly! He is acting lethargic, has been sleeping all day and the only time he gets up is to try to pee. His poo is slightly runny and he hasn't been eating today. This started last night. He has an appointment with Dr. Miller today at 5:30.
The results from the last "stone" came back and the "stone" was made up of Non-organic material. This is what the mystery is. I don't know of anything in his cage that could be causing this. Dr. Miller said that he hasn't seen anything like this in PD's.

Ohh i am so sorry to hear it has come back again. Keep us posted on his condition. You don't happen to have any of the material that absorbs fluid and swells up in his cage do you. I know it sounds like a stretch but there was one product that they were using in diapers years ago that had to be discontinued because every once in a blue moon a little girl would show urinary problems. I know it is a stretch but they have so many products out there for our pet , i was just wondering

Misty, I am so sorry to hear poor Pooder is having problems again. My heart goes out to you. If something ever happened to my girls I know I would be devastated. Take care, your baby will be in my thoughts.
