Potty trained?

Are you one of the lucky ones to have a potty trained pd? How did you do it?

My girls go anywhere they please in the cage. Sometimes I find "prairie pellets" outside of the cage. I swear sometimes they're having poop fights while I'm sleeping!

Will you take pictures of this PD poop, like erin did with the piggies. Maybe we can start a poop information page with the best gallery available LOL!

Both of my pd girls are potty trained, well at least one of them is loyal to the potty all the time !!
My girl Precious was potty trained, and for some reason now, she is so lazy, she will go wherever.
This is how how did it. Since their cage has two levels, their potty is at the bottom. I use the recycled pellet litter, and yes they will eat this! I know it sound's wierd and gross, but I used to pick up their poop, and place it in their litter pan. The more I did this, they would just go in the potty since their poop was in there. It worked for me to train them, try doing the same thing.

Good Luck!!

My girls fling everything in their cage......food dish, pvc tube, hidey house, poop and they are constantly re-arranging stuff. I don't think a potty pan would stay upright for more than 2 seconds with those 2 rowdy girls!

Babypd, don't worry about anyone thinking that picking up poop is gross. I'm sure everyone on this forum has picked up a turd at some point in their life.

Oh, and Dena, I'll try to get a picture of a "prairie pellet" posted soon to add to the poop gallery. I'm already laughing hysterically that I posted the word turd earlier, so taking pics of them should really be fun.

Hey Scarlette,

Prairie dogs should be called "Prairie Stinkers"
For some reason, they all love their poopies!
They can be so devious I swear same with me, my girls have poop, food and bedding fights all the time!! They will play in their litter, eat their litter, I put cool chew toys in their cage, forget it, their litter bowl is more of a chew toy and so is their pvc pipe. They are NUTS!! I have to yell and them all the time, but that just doesn't faze them, they just give me a dirty look and continue being bad. I do time out ALL the time, and that just doesn't work for my "VERY SPOILED" Precious, I created a monster, atleast Peanut will listen. Did you try the litter training yet?? If you do, let me know how it's going!!

Nope, haven't tried it yet......deciding on what I could use for a potty pan. I need something heavy....maybe a hollowed out bowling ball or a cement block? I have one of those plastic corner pans like they use for ferrets but then I had nightmares that the girls would eat the plastic and get an intestinal blockage. I have one of those big pots for plants but, once again, I had nightmares that they would break off a piece of it, eat it, and rip out their intestines. Ya, I admit it, I'm an over protective mommy.

If you use the terra cotta flower pot, that should be fine, they can't break it, I use one for my girl's house, they only thing they do is lick it, I told you they are NUTS!. I use a big doggie bowl for their potty, I just bought them a new one, and it's all chewed up on the sides, Precious it the one that chews it up, she thinks it's a chew toy! Try out the flower pot and see what happens, you might be suprized!! I mean that in a good way, if you can believe that

Litter Trained

Babypd , It really works ? How long did it take you to train them ? Explain the "recycled pellet litter" . Sorry I feel really stupid asking all of this . But it sounds like something that would be a good idea for my baby . Connie

HI Connie!!!

It's me Erika!! You e-mailed me with questions you had about pd's and I'm so glad that you joined us at Paw-Talk!!!
Well, sometimes it's had to potty train pd's. My girl Precious was potty trained, now she is VERY lazy and not use the litter pan, but my girl Peanut will. I really think that when my girl Peanut used the litter pan, Precious will not go in it. I use "Critter Country Litter" , there are so many other brands as well. As long as it says "Recycled Pellet Liter" on the bag, it's fine. Don't feel stupid asking questions, that's what we are here for, to help eachother out, just ask away!!!! In my previous post, I just picked up their poop that was on the bottom of their cage and put it in their litter pan, and they started to go in the litter pan, try that and see if it works. GOOD LUCK!!

We have a large flower pot from Walmart I think it cost a couple of dollars. One of those Orange one, clay maybe? We put sand in the bottom and ours just started using it, we didn't do anything they just decided themselves.

I know with bunnies though to encourage them you just put their poops in the litter tray so you could try that if they didn't do it themselves.

When you say flower pot, do you mean a big 'round' one that you turn on its side, kind of thing..are you with me? An if yes, doesn't it roll from side to side?

Have ya got a pic, is what I'm asking ya? LOL

No you just place it standing up. And they climb in and poop and jump back out again.

I can't get you a piccie until Thursday evening at the earliest. I need to get my portfolio handed in at college and I am not going to do anything else with my computer until it is printed out. I need to reinstall the camera and I am afraid it will mess up and I won't be able to print my school work out. ARGGGGHHHHH

Ah, so just your average terracotta flower pot..ok..I will get one of those tomorrow....what did you use to block off the hole in the bottom; maybe I will find one without a hole. I'm chatting to myself now..
