Prairie Dog "Monkey Pox" Issue In Illinois
I just watched the news and they had the prairie dog "Monkey Pox" issue of the dealer in Villa Park, IL named "Phil", I forgot his last name, who had the prairie dogs that were infected, which he said that he got them from Texas. Just like the thread that was posted here in the prairie dog discussion, that is was rats from Africa that carry this virus and infected the prairie dogs. From what the news said, our governor Blagojevich of IL is banning the selling and importing prairie dogs in Illinois, when I was hearing this my heart was pounding and I was thinking NO!! BUT, they said only for this weekend. I hope that is the case, I don't want this to be permanent, since now that it is TOTALLY BANNED in Wisconsin. I hope this issue passes and is long NOT remembered. The media is making it like it's the prairie dog carrying this virus and making them look SO bad. They are the best babes in the world. I hope this blows by. Now everyone is going to be telling me about this since I own two pd's, I'm never going to hear the end of it!!!!

Is there confirmation about it being "totally banned" in Wisconsin or is this a temporary, emergency ban? If someone has info on this or knows where I can check, please let me know! Thanks!

Willi,
From what I had heard on the news, they are going ban "Temporary" selling of prairie dogs in Wisconsin. I don't know how long this is going to be, they didn't say on the news. I'm sorry, I wrote is "TOTALLY BANNED", which I meant it as temporary, I wrote it wrong, that goes to same for everyone else reading my post!!!!

I heard that they were sold in several states including Texas, but I did not hear where they had gotten them from. They are trying to contain it and if they do then it shouldnt stop all selling of them. Hopefully they will learn to do a proper quarantine before selling to sellers.

From what all the reports have said, the prairie dogs were healthy when they left Texas. They aquired the disease when being kept in an unquarantined area with other animals (gambian pouched rats) which were infected somewhere in Illinois. They were shipped out to Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana distributors and private owners from there.

The story last night here in chicago was that the prarie dogs were with a gambian pouched rat. One of the co-workers of Phil Moberly(spelling) of Phil's Pocket Pets here in chicago was quarantined along with I believe Phil and his wife, all animals were quarantined. They received this shipment from Texas, and it is said that the rat was already infected prior to coming to the chicagoland area, inturn infecting others in wisconsin. The latest story can be found here Source
I feel bad for Phil's pocket pets, we have spoken with him personally on more than one occasion, his whole life is his pets, shows, and swap meets, I feel for everyone that is involved, and wish only the best.

I spoke to them today and at this time they are fighting for the lives of their animals.Yes the PDs came in contact with the GPR at their place but for one mistake. One animal who got out their lifes are now blasted from every corner.
They are good people.I would stand up for them any time

Ugh, that is terrible... but goes to show that we all need to be strict and careful with quarantine procedures on new animals we bring home.

Quite a few of my co-workers know I have pd's and they asked me if I'm scared......nope, not at all because I've had my girls for over 2 years now. Just because I own pd's doesn't mean I need to panic. Sheesh!
This too shall pass, hopefully before they ban pd's altogether.

On my drive to work, one of the stations had a blurb about it and of course failed to mention the source and painted a picture that the virus came from the PDs ... I called in!! I made sure they knew the story and all of it.

Ignorance is a very dangerous trait, it's those who are indeed ignorant that cause the most bother. Fingers crossed for it to end soon!

I saw an interveiw last night with one of the owners, and she said they are tracking down all animals they had sold and destroying them. And she is really afraid that the animals they have left will be destroyed also....these animals are all fine and have been in quarantine....
