A question for you bunny owners...

I am asking this because I am getting sort of frustrated with some of the "knowledge" out here on the web...
Do you all just pick up and hold on to the bunnies or let them do their thing and hope they'll warm up to you as they get used to you?

I never had the internet when I had Opie my Netherland Dwarf and I used to pick him up everday and cuddle with him and he loved to be held and cuddled. I tried the slower house Rabbit Society method of letting them get used to me and They never let me hold them or pick them up. They acted terrified if I tried to hold them. Needless to say my sons never have success trying to hold them either and they ignore them for the most part now.

I have decided that I am going back to the old way and I know they will adapt and be more interactive. I was curious about your thoughts...

I personally still stick to the old methods of pick a rabbit up and hold on to it. My rabbits love their cuddles and I have picked them up from day one. I do however just sit with them when I'm holding them the first week or so and if they seem to be getting frustrated and want to be free I let them. I still do that now. I like my rabbits to believe that being held is a good thing and that they are not trapped into it. With Molly I took things a little bit slower because she had been tormented by children and was terrified of being picked up (I think she had been dropped a few times). It took me a month to get her used to me and now she circles my legs and scratches at me to be picked up and cuddled! Molly was also four months old when I got her so she's the oldest I've ever gotten a rabbit. I do believe that some of the knowledge on the internet is false and it is up to the owners to decide on what they will listen to. I for one do not listen to the advice of only giving rabbits vegetables after a certain age. It is just not heard of here in Australia and I do not know of one rabbit that has ended up sick from it. I do introduce vegetables to my rabbits slowly just incase but have never had a problem feeding an 8 week old rabbit a piece of carrot. anyway getting off track here!
In the end with Molly I had to pick her up and sit her on my lap cause she wasn't going to do it herself! I would not move while I had her there except to give her re-assuring pets and she got used to me very quickly. So while I do not belive in allowing small children to pick up a rabbit until it is used to being held (cause if it kicks out and scratches they are likely to let go) I don't believe in never holding a rabbit either! Just my opinion....I know other people will totally disagree with me but it works for me.

Thanks RS, I agree with your thoughts. I know that I have been thinking things through for a while and I realized that I lost touch with why I have pets and why I wasn't enjoying experience as much as before. They seem to hold on to fear when they aren't continuously held. I didn't want to traumatize Ruth when we got her so iItook it very slowly and I know that she is comfortable WITH me just not being held on to. Well now I have to cut her toenails and if I so much as look like I am going to hold her she flees in terror. I am so frustrated with my situation and I just read on another forum about a person in the same boat as me and the advice she received was just let them get used to you don't hold them but trim the nails as you HAVE to do that. To what end is this advice giving? They only associate holding with fear and nail trimming? They don't learn that holding and petting are part of the pleasure we can give them. I did what you were saying with Opie. When he was done being cuddled I let him go also, but he also saught me out for love and cuddles. He didn't fear me EVER. I am just so frustrated. I hate bad advice! One person went so far as to say that some rabbits take years to get comfortable being held. When an animal only lives for 4-8 years that is just bad advice and totally unacceptable!

I agree LMC why wait four years for something that can be sorted out in as little as a week!!! The first day I had Rodger he sat on me and watched a whole movie with me! He was the best rabbit but if i didn't pick him up he wasn't likely to come over and actually speak to let me know that he was ready to be picked up!!lol I know of a girl on another forum that I used to go to who frowns deeply upon you holding a rabbit and thinks that she is a rabbit expert. While she does know a lot I always wondered if she reaslied how much extra stress she was putting on her rabbit if it needed to go to the vet. You don't have to hold your rabbit every single day if you don't want to but it is necessary (IMO) that they are comfortable with it so that when they are sick they don't get stressed out by being elevated from the ground. I also take my rabbits for the occassional weigh in as well so they get used to the car......yes I am a wee bit paranoid over my babies!lol
