Feeding Amount Question

Until we get our garden going, I am feeding my rabbits pellets and hay. I've looked around but haven't been able to find out the amount of pellets I should be feeding my two baby bunnies per day. My bunnies are probably somewhere between 6-8 weeks of age (avatar pic), just guessing, got them at a pet store a week ago. I highly doubt either one even weighs a pound yet. So how much pellets should I be feeding them a day along with their hay which I just keep available to them at all times?

Thanks.

My bag of food says to free feed kits. According to the book "Rabbits for Dummies," once they are eating hay and greens, cut back on the pellets to 1/2 cup per 5 pounds of body weight until they're 6 months old; when 6 months or older, cut back to 1/4 cup per 5 pounds of body weight. It also says timothy-based pellets is best. I know that alfalfa is fattening. My vet told me that they can live on timothy hay. Hay is good for them as long as it isn't alfalfa hay and give them as much hay as they want.

Congratulation on your new bunnies.

Congrats on your new bunnies..
I would just give them a few handfuls of food to see how they get on, if they eat it then give them some more.. Make sure they have hay (especially Timothy hay) and water available at all times.. I am sure you are doing the right thing already anyway? Good luck..

Thanks. I'll give them as much as they want for now. I think by the time they are old enough that I have to worry about them becoming overweight, that I'll have them on greens from the garden by then anyway.

I know we've always given more pellets to the younger one's, also if you can get alfalfa hay I would alternate that with timothy, as younger bunnies need more alfalfa in their diet verses older bunnies.
Here is a good site that can help you http://www.rabbitnetwork.org
