Fleas?
Flea season is here...my dogs picked some up when Shane forgot to treat them last week when they were due. We use Frontline Plus on the dogs and we just didn't notice the reminder sticker on the calender. They got their treatment yesterday and are much less itchy already
On the other hand, I've noticed Lucky Jack scratching a lot...I'm wondering if he's got them too now. Normally we don't treat the house due to the chins and kids (bad experience with kids and flea products...my brother suffers from a seizure disorder from exposure when he was little) and usually after some time, all fleas eventually land on the dogs and are irraticated. If Lucky Jack does indeed have fleas, what can I do for him to get rid of them? Can you bathe a rabbit? If so, what would you suggest I use? I plan on asking the vet in the morning when I drop him off for his neuter, but suggestions from all you rabbit people would be helpful too...
Thanks

You might be able to front line him too. I've heard of frontlining hamsters before (from a vet) and have had to frontline a ferret before so I don't see a problem with a rabbit. Frontline does not contain a pesticide like many other products do and many vets find it extremely safe now.

Yes rabbits can get fleas!!! You may need to bath Jack if he has flea dirt on him. Use a bunny shampoo or one for kittens and puppies. You can use advantage on him but not frontline.....frontline KILLS rabbits!!!! Or you can get a flea powder and use tiny amounts of that. Just brush it off really well!!! Otherwise sprinkle talcom powder on him...it makes the fleas noticeable and you can them pick them off him if you are worried about the flea products!!

I've never heard that before. Every vet around here swears by it but then again I only asked about hamsters not rabbits. I know that what ever is in the K-9 Advantix is harmful to cats and I wouldn't trust it on my dog either at this point, its too new.

No ffrontline is no good for bunny's although I did have a vet who has now closed down tell me once that it was ok for them!! The company will actually tell you to not use it!!! I've used advantage for puppies and kittens on my bunnies before but only half a tube at a time. Don't want to over do it you know and it has worked well with only half a tube.
I know frontline is bad cause Nacho used ot have fleas no matter what and my dogs always get frontline used for them and the rabbits had to get the other brand...which is advantage at my vets!

Okay, Frontline Kills Rabbits...Got it! NO Frontline for Lucky Jack! I'll ask the vet about Advantage though...and also see what they recommend...No matter what I use, I assume I would have to wait till he's healed up from the neuter anyway...My poor baby!

Actually I went searching for the answer wondering if it was the difference in chemicals that are used. All I could find was that Advantage has been tried and tested to be safe for Rabbits but nothing is said of what Frontline will do. It just says that Frontline suggest not using it because it has adverse side affects. Me now I'm freaking out why does this happen and how does it affect my animals and why does it only seem to be rabbits. This is going to bother me now. I hate when I can't get full answers!
Lots of sites said definitely no bathing but flea powders for cats were the safest. What ever you decide to use make sure that you don't use anything with permythrin in it. Thats the stuff that is even dangerous to cats. And why just cats and not dog? Another question I want to know.

I just wanted to mention thanks for the great info on rabbits (good to learn things so I don't kill anything!)
But now I am incredibly itchy! Just the mere mention of fleas and I'm scratching all over.

Dena!!!! And frontline don't really want to put in big bold letters 'we kill rabbits' you know so lots of people don't know but if you ring them and tell them you are going to use it they will tell you not to!!!
And lice make me itch all over...fleas I'm ok with!

I just have to add something to this after a negative reputation I received for this thread. I don't care to know who did it....it is not why I am posting this. I just want to say that I'm sorry if I come across that I'm trying to advertise advantage....I am not I swear!!! I prefer to use frontline and do so on my dog. The only reason why I say to not use frontline on rabbits is because when I had a flea problem with my rabbits my vet wasn't sure and rung both companies and Frontline told him that their product is fatal to rabbits and they actually told him that advantage was safe!!! I do not think I'm a vet, I am not trying to pretend to be one and I'm sorry if I came across that way.
Yes, I wanted to make the message loud and clear....I don't want to see anyone's rabbit die from something they simply didn't know when I knew....I would never have lived with myself. That's all I have to say....I'm just clarifying for that person and apologising if anyone else thought I was advertising or was coming across as a big know it all. Seeing that reputation bothered me....I don't want to be seen that way at all.
