Question

Food Confusion...

Ive been trying to figure out, what foods are OK for bunnies? The main food in question is lettuce... It seems ever ywhere I look, I geta different answer! I usually give Smudge about 1/2 a leaf of romain (sometimes a little more) a day along with some other fruits and veggies. He doesnt diarehha from it and I dont over do it, so I dont see to much of a problem. I looked this up last night and some peole say its perfectly fine, others say it kills them, and some say its OK in small quailities. Whats the real answer?!

I feed my bunnies romain lettuce and it has never harmed them. I also fed my old bunny romain lettuce and he lived 15 years, so it oveously didn't harm him either.

As long as you don't feed him to much of it, he should be fine. Iceburg lettuce is the one you want to stay away from. Iceburg lettuce has no nutrients, and is more watery so it can cause stomach upset easier.

Romain lettuce has more nutrients, and less water, so it's better/safer for them. Just make sure that you don't feed him so much that it upsets his tummy.

I give hoppity lettuce all the time, only Romain and red and green leaf (which are usually sold next to romain) its the only veggie he eats everytime i give it to him, that and cilontro. Im not sure what else is safe or not, but lettuce doesnt seem to hurt hoppity. i think just iceburg lettuce is the one thats bad, the i heard a guy at the petshop say you shouldnt feed any animals iceburg lettuce.

I give my buns leaf lettuces not head lettuces. And nice dark green leafy things. Teddy hates romaine but all my other bunnies like it. I also get red leaf, green leaf, escarole, chiccory, broccoli rabe, broccoli, cauliflower, collards, parsley, dandelions, endive, green peppers, red peppers. They have all been vet approved. You just need to ease them into new veggies (and fruits) to be sure that you bunny can tolerate it.
For fruits I use pineapple, bananas, strawberry, blueberry, raisins, grapes, apples, carrots (I know they are veggie but they are sweet and should be treated like a fruit - same with tomatoes)
House Rabbit Society has a good list of bunny safe foods. You can always double check with a vet.

As a english angora breeder I can give you a list of good "bun" treats like everyone said no iceberg lettuse. However you can treat them w/ apples, carrots, bananna(with peel), any dark leafy greens, herbs(parsiley,basil,mint..bunnies favorite, kale, ect.,)raisins, grapes, melon, bell peppers(different colors) I actually have rabbits that only eat green peppers while yet another one only eat yellow. They also love blackseed sunflower seeds(great for coats), oats, crackers, and bread. I tell every rabbit owner to grow an herb garden(small, looks pretty in kithen, easy to grow). Also remeber these are treats, other than the herbs and leafy(can be feed 2 times a week). Even the fruit and vetables should only be feed at most 1 a week. Hope to have helped.

I give my bunnies fruit and veggies everyday. They have hay and plain pellets as their main diet but i also give them a variety of fruits and veggies on a daily basis and my vet said they are perfectly healthy!!

They have carrots,dandelions,banana.pineapple,grapes,strawbe rries,peppers (all colours) celery,kale,mint,basil,apple,pear,plum,spinach,wat ercress,lavender

I dont give them all that at once lol they have it seperated so they get different things on different days!!

I got my bunny from a breeder, and was told to only give a 1/2 cup of pellets a day. He's just a little Holland Lop, but he's such a piggie! I give him a 1/4 cup in the morning and a 1/4 cup in the evening. But still he goes through them. I make sure to give him Timothy hay and then little veggie treats because I've read in so many places that veggies are not only OK but good - even though the breeder told me only a thumb sized amount of veggie a day ... I tend to go a little over. I figure thumb size is relative ... right? Hahah ...

Yeah I buy them at the store. I had a hard time finding them for awhile, but then I started going to a new food store and they usually have them.

You can just feed them dandelion greens that grow in your yard or whatever too as long as your sure they're no pestasides or anything like that on them. And wash them before you give them to your pets. Rabbits usually love the leaves as well as the flowers, and they're good for them too!
