I've heard that hay racks can be dangerous, but it was always a "he said she said" thing, so I always though it wouldn't happen to me. Boy, was I wrong.
While I was cleaning the cages today, Charlie decided to go exploring in her playpen and she kept trying to climb up the wall. She was sitting up and wanted to sit down, but her front right leg got caught in the
hay rack in some way. She was stuck and I tried lifting her up since I thought it was just under her fur or something, but she couldn't get loose. At this point, Charlie started panicking, and she wanted to flip over, but I was holding her. I had to pry her leg from the hay rack.
She wasn't hurt, thank God!!! She got tons of treats and loving from me to calm her down, and me too! I will be removing the hay racks as soon as my dad gets home, he knows how to remove them.
I am sooo glad I was there to see Charlie get caught in the rack, what if I hadn't been there? She could have broken or dislocated her leg, or worse. I certainly feel horrible for letting this happen.
Is there any other way I can elevate the hay? I don't want it on the ground when they are consuming it, but I don't mind stray pieces on the ground.
