Looking for the right breed...

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a breed...
I am looking for a smaller rabbit. I would like a calmer, friendlier breed.
Any suggestions?

Im no expert but i think i read somewhere that dutch rabbits are supposed to be a bit more friendly than the rest.. but that could just be cuz there a bit more popular, this is a dutch..

I also just read that Jersey Woolies are very friendly, anyone agree? I would like to know real people's opinions, not just read it off a website.
Thanks for letting me know about the dutch, I will check them out also.

Dutch are the best breeds in my opinion: They are extremely cutr, calm, and stay around 5 pounds. Thats what Oreo and Smudge are. You can see Smudges pic in my avatar.

There aren't huge personality differences in most rabbit breeds because they weren't bred for certain temperaments (like some dogs).

This is especially true for the smaller breeds which were simply bred for specific markings, colors, ears, fur length, etc. Temperament was not considered.

Your best bet would be to go to a rabbit show or shelter (depending on where you plan to get your rabbit) and see which breed you like best .

Some of my favorite smaller breeds are the Jersey Woolie, Dutch, Britannia Petite, and Holland Lop. Out of those I've found Jersey Woolies and Holland Lops to be the calmest but Dutch rabbits are often outgoing and friendly. Britannia Petites are very small and this makes them more nervous, it seems, but they are still great companions .

It also of course depends on the breeder if you're going that route. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions...in fact, they should be asking you just as many. A responsible breeder will make sure their rabbit is going to a good home and won't sell a rabbit to just anyone. They also should show their rabbits and be familiar with breed standards. A good breeder is trying to improve the breed, not make money or have cute babies.

My cousin has a mini rex and she is a really sweet bunny.Normally when I meet buns, they are nervous or high strung, but this one will come right up and want cuddles and she was from a breeder. And ALL the mini rex rabbits at that breeder's place were really friendly.

I have a neitherland dwarf, and a lionhead. Both are small, my lionhead is only a tiny bit larger then my neitherlands dwarf. Both of mine are sweeties. Zeus (my dwarf) is very hyper, and Barnaby is much more laid back.

Barnaby also doesn't mind being picked up and held, which Zeus hates. I have seen a lot of sites recommend lionheads because they are usually calm and friendly.

But maybe you could go into a shelter and look at the rabbits they have? I've seen lots of adorable little rabbits in shelters and that way you could meet it and get to know it's personality a little before you take it home.

I was actually thinking of a lionhead also, but I heard they are really hyper, but not much about them because they are so new. You say Barnaby is laid back? I would like a more laid back rabbit. Maybe I will check them out too. I know there are a few breeders around me, maybe I will have to go and visit a couple...

Well, I am either getting a Jersey Woolie, or a lionhead/lop mix. The lionhead mix babies are ready to go now, and the Jerseys were just born a few days ago, so I guess now I just have to decide! I am thinking of visiting the lionhead mix babies next week, I will take some pics for you guys!

Wierd, I posted a reply last night, but I don't see it here....
I am either getting a Jersey Woolie, or a lionhead/holland mix. I just have to decide now! The lionhead mixes are about ready to go now, and the Jerseys were just born a few days ago, so I don't know yet. I think my best bet is to visit and see if any are particularly friendly. I will keep you posted, and post pics of my visit!
