Maybe a new bun...hmmm

I have been thinking about adopting another bun to possibly bond with my Lola. I have never had two before, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice.

Lola is a one year old dwarf mix and she is fixed.
Would a male or female be better? Does the age of her hopefully new buddy matter?

I wanted to get a mini lop. What do you guys think? Thanks!

Hello

I just got a second rabbit myself and I love having two. It's so fun watching them play together and I feel better knowing that they keep each other company when I'm not around.

I think a male would be better. Usually fixed females and fixed males get along the best. Females can be friends with other females but it could be a lot harder to bond them.

When I was looking into getting a new bunny I read that it's good to try to get a bunny either around the same age, or younger. But if you fall in love with an older one it would probably be fine too.

You should definatly look around in rabbit shelters in your area. Most of them (around here at least) will let you take your rabbit in to go on some 'bunny dates' with the rabbits at the shelter so you can see which ones your rabbit gets along with.

Rabbit bonding can sometimes take time though, so you have to be willing to work with them everyday and you have to keep them in seperate cages until they are bonded. I bonded Barnaby and Zeus in less then two weeks. I think the important thing when bringing in a new bunny to to consider the personality of the one you already have. Are they friendly? Are they social? If you have a rabbit that is more of a loner, he/she might not like another bunny around. But most bunnies do enjoy company. Also - try to match personalitys if you can. For example, if you have a dominate rabbit it might not be a good idea to get another dominate one, because they may fight more. If you have a shy bunny, then getting a aggressive probably wouldn't be the best match - you get the idea! You have to play bunny match maker!

I would recommend finding a shelter that offers bunny dates. I am still trying to bond my two girls. I have one bonded pair but they are brother and sister and have always been able to at least see each other. Once they were both fixed they were bonded in about a week or so. I brought in another female had her fixed and still cannot get her to get along well with my first female. And now I have another male to bond into the group as well.
I do think it depends on the bunny - who she will like as a mate so she should be able to make the choice.
And it is wonderful to watch buns interact with one another.

Thanks for the info. I have been looking in petfinder and the newspaper, as well as craigslist looking for a bun that needs a home to no avail. but I will continue looking!
