My rabbit's nose has a growth on it...?

A few days ago, I noticed some growth on the tip of my rabbit's nose. It feels hard, rough, and dry to the touch. Here are some pics of the growth:

Aside from this growth, I have not observed anything else unusual about him.

I know that the obvious thing to do is to have him checked out by a vet, but till I can find a competent vet that treats rabbits in my area, it would help very much if anyone can identify what this is. Also, if it is a health risk to him, can someone recommend a treatment? The more simple the treatment, the better.

Add'l info:
> Contrary to what some people have suggested, it is not dried/encrusted mud.
> He stays indoors all the time
> He is a solitary rabbit/pet (doesn't share space with any other pets)
> He is about 3 months old

Looks nasty. It looks like the same growth that the girl with the bunny and the chicken on here had but i cant remember what that was! Good for a rabbit owner myself isnt it lol my bunnies are never ill tho thankfully!!! I hope your bun bun gets better soon. I would just take him to a vet and see what they say its better to be safe than sorry.

aww bless him.
would take him 2 the vet even though you havnt found a good one yet (i know how hard that is, took me a few weeks of searching and asking the right questions!). But vets are still the best people to let you know whats wrong, and to treat your baby
also your vet might have connections with rabbit vets, who they could ask. there is a website, internet vets (or something like that) where you can speak to a vet on line and get advise. which is good... but they do charge!!.

Dragonrain will become famous soon enough
Where do you live? Here's the House Rabbit Society's lists of recommended rabbit vets, maybe that'll help you find one.

Good luck!

That reminds me of what my bunny Tabby had. The vet told me it was a mite that they all carry but sometimes can flourish and get out of control.
The vet gave her a shot a week for 3 weeks and it went away. And the shots were not expensive at all. Tabby had hers for some time because I didn't realize what it was. And she just kept getting worse.

Poor little guy.

It looks like rabbit syphilis. We just finished treating our baby for it. She had developed a red nose and crusty formations. She did not get symptoms on her genitals. The vet thought it was pasturella at first because she had congestion with it. After spending close to $500 we treated her with penicillin injections 3 doses one week apart. The injections were only $20 each. She is doing so much better now. She was only 5 months old and had not been bred so she probably contracted it from her mother during birth. It is contagious, so if you have other bunnies they will need to be treated as well. If you go to www.homepage.mac.com/exoticdvm/ (sorry...don't know how to post sites that you can just click on)there is photos of what it looks like. It is very gross (almost like sea coral growing on their noses.) Good luck...finding a vet as well as treating the bunny.

Oh that is so yucky! The poor bunnies that have that. Luckybunny - I am really glad that your bunny is getting better. I am glad you hung in there even though the bill got so high. It's too bad that the real inexpensive treatment was not found sooner.
Funny - 3 injections is what my bunny had to have too. I think the first one was about 20 but each time it was less money. I have no idea why.

Did that crustyness form gradually or was it like that all of a sudden? It looks similar to cold sores and if it hurts as much as one I feel awful for the bunny. Molly had nasal discharge. Does your little guy? We finally developed some photos of our baby when we first got her in October...she had a red nose back then....so her case must have been on going since then...possibly the bonding stressed her enough to really bring it on. It was a gradual soreness with the worst looking like really puffy lips with sores on it. She lost the fur around her mouth and all of her nose. Our vet researched with the veterinary college and came up with the diagnosis of Treponema. I hope that is all it is because it was an easy fix.

yes, both of them did..... i went to the vet and told me it was sarcoptic mange and it was too late for my babies to be treated and had to be put to sleep. my rabbits dident show any symptoms of being sick so i researched the net and read that a growth can just be dry skin and i thought thats what my babies had but i wasnt! growth on a nose or anybody part can be one of the most dangerouse sickness a rabbit can have. so if u see any growth or any flakes on your bunnies body go to a vet. immedatly im telling u guys this from expeirance. rabbits are weak animals when it comes to sickness and can die overnight, and losing a rabbit can be one of the sadiest moments in your liife because u can get very attached to them very easily. ( i dont know how they do it but we can get attached to them very fast lol)
