Poll/Question about cages

Hi! Our 2 cages for our new buns are both wire cages with an underneath pan that slides out for cleaning. I have the bottom of the pan lined with newspaper, but it really, really smells in the room I have them in.

For those of you who have wire cages, what is in the bottom? Would it help if it was aspen/wood chips?

What can I do to make it smell not so horrible?

Thanks in advance

My rabbits are litter-trained (I would recommend doing that...sooo much easier) and I use unscented Yesterday's News. It doesn't really smell unless I'm late cleaning out the litterboxes.

Yesterday's News is great but if you can't get it then yes, aspen shavings would work a lot better. Newspaper is good underneath the litter but alone it won't absorb much.

Thanks I got 2 litter boxes and the bunnies are so comical. Cammie was upset to have something new in his cage. He used his teeth to drag it all around the cage before settling on a good spot. He jumped in and ate some hay but the aspen wood chips went flying. Charcoal pushed 99% of the wood out of the box so now I have a really big mess to clean up! I will need to be patient!

If you use Yesterday's News I've found it doesn't make a huge mess like aspen shavings . So you could try that too. Oh, and make sure you have big cat litterboxes (they make a big rabbit one but it's over-priced)...rabbits usually hate the small ones. Don't even bother with the corner litterboxes...out of the nine rabbits that have lived here none of them would use them.

I agree with Sasami -the bigger the better when it comes to the box size.
I use wood stove pellets in my boxes. They can go flying at times but it's not too bad. They are easy to pick up.
I also clean the boxes daily by dumping them out and spraying them with vinager or the food safe cleaner that is out now. I just wipe them out and add more litter and hay.

My bunnies cage has a slide out bottom and I use newspapers, However I change it every day or every other day, sometimes it does not smell good either. Are your bunnies spay/neutered my little guy is neutered and that may make some difference in the potency of his urine. Although I do not use a litter box, he pretty much always uses the same corner spot and has for many many years His cagemate did also when she was alive.
