Question

Pumpkin Seeds

I was wondering if it was okay to give pumpkin seeds to my rabbits. I have 3, so if the seeds aren't good I don't want all of them to get so...or worse. Also, do you bake them or just dry them on a paper towel. Thanks for any advice.

I didn't think that bunnies were supposed to have seeds but I am not completely sure.

I do know that you dry out pumpkin seeds on low heat in the oven. I love pumpkin seeds!

My vet always told me to avoid seeds with bunnies. Im not sure if it's bad for them or if it's just preferable not to feed.

I wouldn't feed them to bunnies, just to be safe. I always hear/read not to feed rabbits any types of seeds or nuts.

But hey, if you don't feed them to the rabbits, then that's more for you! I loooove pumpkin seeds!

Okay thanks. I'm glad that I didn't give them any!! Yesterday I gave them each a half of an apple and they seemed to like that, so I found on enew treat for them. I was giving them carrots until I found out that they contained sugar, so now they don't get them as much or as often. Any other treats for buns? I'd love to give them more of a varietie than what they are getting.

Zeus goes crazy for pineapple.

Try not to give them treats with too much sugar, or treats you buy from the store that have a lot of added sugar. Also avoid human foods. Fruits and veggies make good treats, just don't give them too much. Carrots are good, apples, pineapple, papaya...stuff like that they usually like.

Here's the house rabbit societies list of suggested fruits:
Suggested Fruits

They also have a list of suggested veggies, and a list of plants that are poisnous to rabbits. You should be able to find them on that site, if you need help let me know and I can post the links.

My rabbits eat absolutely everything! On a daily basis i give them hay, pellets, grass and water. They get a variety of different vegetables on different days including....carrots,apple,banana,pineapple,strawb erries, dandelions, celery, flat beans, pear, bean sprouts, spinach, and much more!!
They get small amounts of 2 veggies and 2 fruits a day and i swap them all week so they get different everyday!!

Oh they have orange and grapes too! They love all fruits and veg. I have also given them herbs on occasions too such as mint and basil. My bunnies are very spoilt but the vets said i am doing a good job because they are both in great shape!!

Thanks! I'll have to try those on my buns. I know that they LOVE apples. I am going to be taking them to the vets pretty soon as they are about seven months now and can be fixed. I will also have them get a health update to make sure they're on track and everything.

Thumbs up

yes as a treat

True that we always see never to give seeds to rabbits, but as a breeder I can tell you that if you give them a treat about 4-5 pumpkin seeds most love it. Actually black oil sunflower seeds are great for their coats, I recommend adding it to their pellets(about 4 parts pellets, 1part seeds). I breed English Angoras and as a wool block preventive myEA's usually get mixed seeds once every month forgeting pellets altogether that day. Just remember treats are just that treats.
