rabbit hutch

Can anyone tell me (or send me to a web site) how to build a rabbit hutch? A few days ago I rescued a dwarf rabbit. I have never had a rabbit - and know nothing about them! - so I am completely unprepared. Right now I have him in a cage I already had but I know it isn't big enough ( about 3 1/2ft by 2 1/2ft by 2 1/2ft). I tend to let him roam the house all day and only get in it at night. The bedding I put in there he shoves to the side. I put in towels and he wadded them into a corner. I put in a mineral block too but he hasn't even looked at it I don't think. Any suggestions?

How to Build a Rabbit Cage
by Anna MacInnis
Lighthouse Acres Rabbits

I make all my own cages and have always done so. I've made hundreds over the last 40 years, and now they're second nature to me. I use all wire cages because they are self-cleaning and odor-free. Making a cage is very simple. Aside from a table or workbench to work on, you need:

A rabbit hutch is a cage-like accomodation for your rabbit. If you’d like to build one, these do-it-yourself instructions for a 30-inch by 36-inch basic woven wire hutch, with a hardware cloth floor may be of help. This size provides ample room for one rabbit, but you can modify the size to accommodate multiple rabbits (a hutch should be at least four times the size of the rabbit).

Ok, so I bought the supplies. The guy at the hardware store acted like I had lost my mind. Why is it men think only they can operate a hammer? Anyhoo - hopefully Peter will have his hutch tomorrow. :-)

this is a pic of the plans I use but I make it for one rabbit not 2 and make a enclosed area on one end for shelter but then I live way up in Canada where they need shelter from the cold wind ... remember peter will need shelter from the hot sun that is a common death in rabbits is heat stroke hope this helps

Thank you!! That will make it easier having something to look at as well. Peter won't have to worry about heat - he is an indoor bunny. With the exception of our ferret the animals are taking to him pretty well. I thought if I put something under the bottom that could slide in and out (like the bird cages) it could be cleaned daily and not create an odor problem. I think Peter thinks he is a cat - he is so content to sit in my lap while I type.

Good girl that is a great rabbit cage!
I too build my rabbit pens from scratch.I am very lucky to have a wonderful Hubby ,who has kindly donated his work shop for my rabbit rescue cause I have built 8 pens that are 6 ft by 2ft and 3 ft high. This gives them plenty of room to run and play.I have to say it is so rewarding to build these pens by hand!

Hi, I read the threads about building your own rabbit hutches. My husband and I used to raises rabbits along with a few other animals but most of the building he did. I am now divorce and would very much like to start raising rabbits again and make my own hutches only I don't know where to begin. You mentioned posting a pic of the hutches you made, would it be possible for you to send me a pic. I can't seem to find where the pic was posted. Thanks. Susie
