Salt licks?

Are they a necessity for rabbits? I didn't want to give Dirty one if he really didn't need it. TIA!

I've read that they are necessary. Here's an excerpt by Sandy Crook the author of Lop Rabbits as Pets She writes,"It is mandatory that a plain white salt spool be hung in the cage- but not over the water or food crocks as it has a tendancy to drip, due to condensation. Products other than a plain salt spool (e.g. mineral spool, etc.) are not recommended unless a specific diet deficiency has been diagnosed. Salt spools can be attached to a piece of wood and secured to a side wall or hung by using rust- proof salt spool hanger or wire. Though it is said by some that the feed itself has the required amount of salt, I have seen some Lops consume a salt spool within a short period of time. Just like people, some lops need more salt than others, and who is to say that they would endure the hot summer months as well with out availabe salt spools?"
