I'm not so sure about pain med for all rabbits. I had two 5 month old rabbits spayed a couple of years ago. After I got them home, I was supposed to keep them calm, but they kept trying to escape their cages. One did manage to escape her cage and was running and jumping around like she was in the Olympics. I can't imagine how active she would have been if she felt no pain.

I think the Baytril is a good idea, but I can't afford to pay the vet myself, so my fosters will not be getting it. Their vet bills are the responcibility of the organization I foster for. However, I do have some Baytril on hand for emergency.

I'd talk to your org about covering the medication, it's not terribly expensive. Bactrim post-neuter for two rabbits costs us between 10-15 bucks (depending on the size of the bunny) for the whole course -- draining an abscess easily costs $75+ (depending on the area and complication of the site).

Rabbits are prey animals and will be quite active even when they are in pain. Metacam especially is also an anti-inflammatory and also promotes better healing in the early days post-spay because it does inhibit swelling and inflammation at the site of the surgery. Rabbits also consume less food post surgery associated with pain (as seen here: http://www.ingentaconnect.com/conten...00003/art00008) and dosing with Metacam helps prevent anorexia and stasis post-surgery.

TBH, I find it pretty unusual that your vet doesn't insist on giving antibiotics and pain meds. I haven't ever had a small animal surgery done where they didn't try to send me home with pain meds, even relatively small cyst removals.

Thanks, Jennicat. I will contact the organization. Spays/neuters are done by a well known and respected national animal rescue organization, so I was suprised last time when I did not receive any antibiotics. When I had rabbits spayed by my own vet, I received antibiotics for the rabbits, but I don't remember if they were given pain meds.

They may just not be very rabbit savvy. Some of the bigger places do bunnies because there is such a need, but don't necessarily have a bunny person. Our local SPCA was similar until a bunny person stepped up to give them improved protocols.

They do work with the MN Companion Rabbit Society, so they should know. I don't know what kind of instructions they give to the organization I foster for, but I was never given a perscription before. I sent an email to my rescue organization, and if I don't hear back, I think I will take the meds with me that I have and ask if I can use them and what the correct dose should be. I know the organization I foster for is going through some hard time right now.

I got an answer back from the organization. They only give meds for pain and inflammation. I think I will just take the meds I have with me, and ask the vet if it would be alright if I give Honey the antibiotics.

I was just about to give an update on him!
I let him run around for the first time since his surgery yesterday, and I think he was happy to stretch his legs!
Ive already noticed alot of behavior improvements- He uses his litter box in his cage SO much better now, and hes perfect at only going to the bathroom in his litterbox during floortime, and he seems to have lost his insane obcession with blankets. When I first let him out, I was holding my breath half expecting him to start circling or humping me, but that behavior is gone too! I redid his cage and I took a bunch of pics that I have to post LOL :]

I'm LATE: Im so happy to hear about Smudge! Im glad he's ok!! Super stoked about his noticeable behavior changes Congrats!
Umm, about the Baytril, call me insane but I actually took myself a little taste when Acacia had it for her post-facial surgery.. Even though it tastes like strawberry, it still has a bitter medicine taste..So that's why they hate it.. I know, Amanda is loopy..

Thanks!
Haha, I was SO tempted to taste it, but I was worried that I might die or something if I did. I have a habbit of tasting my pets food, and I have to say, Yogies and Crunch-Arounds are the best LOL! So dont worry Amanda... Your not the only loopy one

Those are better for them anyway since bunbuns are lactose intolerant.
