We have Dandelions in our yard!

Its kinda pathetic that us having weeds makes me happy isn't it? but we didn't have any Dandelions when we were living in the apartment. the stuff they sprayed everywhere for stickers killed everything except the stickers Ive always loved Dandelions tho.. We had two apple trees when i was little, and in the spring they would be covered with white blossoms, and the grass would be dark green with bright yellow Dandelions everywhere.

Anyway. Ive noticed something interesting i never noticed before. Theres two kinds of Dandelions.. well not really, apparently theres Dandelions and Catsear, also known as false dandelions.. So i was wondering do you have both in your yard? They basically look the same. Catsears have a solid stem and dandelions have a hallow stem.. Apparently they are both edible and both can be used as salad greens and such. Do you think the rabbits can eat either one?

Bunnies can eat dandelion leaves.
I never knew there were two different types. I know I have seen the kind with the hallow stems.
We only get a few dandelions because Jay is insane about the grass and gets rid of them. I could never let the buns eat them anyway. Everyone in our neighborhood uses chemicals on their lawns. Jay has started using organic products but I still worry about cross contamination from the other yards.

I worry about that too, chemicals from other peoples yards.. people here go crazy with them too cuz of the stickers (Goathead) but i was thinking maybe i could collect some of there seeds this summer, and try to plant some in a pan of some type.. then bunny could have a buffet I'd love to plant a totally bunny safe garden. in a raised bed. that we could let her loose in once in awhile.. wouldnt that be neat?

I planted nastriums last year in pots that I sunk into the rocks around our grill. They got HUGE! They looked beautiful. I brought Teddy out once to nibble them and he was completely uninterested. I plan on doing it again this year. I started them as seeds in potting soil that was for vegetables. I figured that had to be safe for the buns.
I did pick the flowers for them and put them on thier salads each night. They enjoyed them.
I also have a raised bed that I grow grape tomatoes in. The buns enjoyed those too. In the raised garden I also have mint. If you grow that you will only need to plant it once. You cannot get rid of it after that even if you try!
I also will grow bell peppers. It's nice because it does save me some money on bunner food in the summer. I wish I had more space so I could grow lettuce.

If your buns like cilantro that grows pretty well too. Mine has come back 2 years in a row. I didn't know it would do that. Gotta love dandelions when you run out of salad for the bunners.

cilantro is one of few things i know our rabbit will eat. shes kinda picky sometimes. her favorites are cilantro and leaf lettuce. I'm hoping if we grow some stuff fresh she would be more willing to eat it.. or at least try it!

I have been trying to grow carrots. They never seem to amount to anything edible for us so I wasn't going to waste my time this year, but on second thought the bunnies prefer the carrot tops anyway. I was thinking of planting herbs at the end of our sidewalk where we have been taking Molly out for exercise. She would love to chow down on the veggies.

I used to plant carrots in my garden! It was a raised vegetable garden and I got some wonderful fat carrots one summer. Carrots and cherry tomatoes were the best, cause my sister and I would just pull stuff up out of the garden, wash it off with the hose and eat while we played in the backyard. I think my dad started the carrots right in the garden and didn't transplant them like the other veggies.

How big of an area do you need for carrots?

You could plant a row. It wouln't take much room. I think my problem was that I put too many seeds too close together then didn't thin them out to give them room to grow. They were always just little strings.
