Found a Turtle...

Can anyone tell me what kind it is and what it needs? After looking on the 'net I think he's a box turtle? I know you all have TONS of great sites, but the truth is that I really don't have much time to research them. I'm not sure I want to keep it but Ry is in love. So even if we just keep it for a few days, how do I care for it and where should I let it go?

It looks like a box turtle by the picture on the site, but with turtles you have to be carefull because of salmelia (I don't think I spelled it right) I had a water turtle for a while, I just bought turtle food for him I think most pet store sell it.

It should not be let go, unless you know exactly where it came from. Box turtles have a very strong homing instinct, and do not relocate well from their home range. They almost always end up dying trying to get back again.

The risk of salmonella from turtles is no higher than it is from grocery store bought chicken, or most people's kitchen sponges. Simply make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after handling, and don't let children stick their hands in their mouth, etc. Nothing less than you'd do if you were handling a piece of raw meat.

Box turtles are omnivores. Fruits, veggies, insects, and even some other meats. Chelonian Trust's Box Turtle Information.
