Birds and Wildflowers

Wildflowers, whether in the wild or in your backyard, are important to wildlife. They provide nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies in the spring and summer. Then in the autumn as the wildflowers die or go dormant, the seed heads provide food for the birds.
Although many of us may admire expanses of wildflowers that we view in magazines or as we drive by them on the side of the road, we hesitate to include them in our yards. In some cases, they may appear "weedy." Or they may not be carried by the local nursery in little pots all ready to plant. BUT, we birders, need these plants, difficult as they may be; wildflowers are valuable to birds.
